3. There are many other factors for its prevalence.

4. It is very poisonous to the society. It creates discontentment in society.

6. It can be rooted out by adopting simplicity and contentment in life.

Some-one has wisely said,

“The duty of youth is to challenge corruption”

Corruption is as old as man. It has existed in the world since ancient times. It has various forms and shapes. Corruption exists in all countries of the world. However, its rate is very high in the under-developed countries. It exists in the form of cheating, fraud, swindling (دھوکہ). Bribery and acceptance of gratification (bribery) are its other forms. As, it is rightly said,

“Corruption is like a ball of snow,

once it's set a rolling it must increase.”

In Pakistan, all types of corruption exist in the Government as well as in the private sector. In the recent survey conducted by the international agencies, Pakistan has figured No. 2 in the world as regard corruption. The scholars and religious thinkers have expressed great anxiety over the wide spread phenomenon (trend) of corruption. As, it is wisely said,

“No science is immune to the infection of

politics and the corruption of power.”

There are many reasons for the prevalence of corruption in the society.

First: Everyone wants to become rich by every means in a capitalistic (سرمایہ دارانہ) country. The glitter of western civilization has urged every person to adopt high standard of life. There is hardly any person in our society who does not want to have the modern facilities of life. He wants to live in a rich bungalow and ride a beautiful car. In order to lead a life of glitter and glow, he tries to raise money by fair or foul means. It is only by corruption and acceptance of bribes that a rapid change takes place in the financial condition of a person. As, it is rightly said,

“To confront criminals, we need to finish with corruption.

If we don't do this, there is no hope.”

Secondly: The prices of things are sky-rocketing. The standard of living which is very high, cannot be maintained in the meager amount of wages.

Thirdly: The government servants mostly accept bribe because their salary is very

small. A government official cannot live in the meager amount of salary or pension. In order to fulfill their needs, they are tempted to accept bribes. As, it is wisely said,

“Corruption is the most infallible symptom of constitutional liberty.”

Fourthly: There are many customs and traditions which we observe society. We spend lavishly on our marriages and funerals. We have to raise money to meet these unnecessary expenditures.

Fifthly: The corrupt people thrive in our society without any fear of punishment. They are not punished by any way. They are very influential people. As, it is rightly said,

“People should be conscious that

they can change a corrupt system.”

Corruption is very poisonous to our society. It spreads discontentment in the society. The young educated people do not get jobs after the completion of the education. Merit is discarded and more attention is given to bribery. In a society, governed by corrupt officials, the stability of the country is at risk. As, it is wisely said,

“Corruption is nature's way of restoring our faith in democracy.”

The highly powered government officers can sell the confidential secrets, regarding the security of the country, to the enemy, after accepting bribe. The whole system of morals, ethical and religious is impaired (damaged) at the hands of corrupt officers. In a country, ruled by corrupt officers, the distinction between right and wrong is finished. The country offers the picture of disorder and anarchy. As, it is rightly said,

“The real cost of corruption in government,
whether it is local, state,
or federal, is a loss of the public trust.”

Only sincere leaders and government can take risk to eradicate corruption from the society. In fact, this action is difficult but not impossible. As, it is wisely said,

“There are still those of us who work to

overcome corruption and believe it to be possible.”
