Essay No. 1
MY LAST DAY AT SCHOOL/College
The last and the first days at school/college are of unique significance for students. As the first day is the day of hope, happiness and expectations as well as anxiety, fear and nervousness, on the other hand,
“The last day at school/college is surely a day of hope,
confidence and stability”.
It is indeed pathetic incident on one's part to be departed from one's near and dear colleagues. But it comes in everybody's life just as the sun sets in the west at the time of twilight. I experienced the sorrowful incident when I was about to appear the Board Annual Examination.
It is a tradition to bid farewell to the students of class 10th/12th by the students of class 9th/1st. It was in the month of March that one day; our teacher entered the class dramatically and conveyed the message that a farewell meeting would be held in the spacious hall of the school/college building. As it is rightly said,
“A school/college is place where one comes to learn and leaves to serve”.
The 20th March, was my last day at school/college. I was full of mingled feelings of joy and sorrow. I was happy at the idea of freedom and preparation holidays for full one month. I was sad at the thought of parting from my teachers, friends and school/college mates.
We were asked to come to school/college at 2 p.m. on that day. All the students of the 10th/12th class were well-dressed. We were free from school discipline and the school bags were not on our shoulders. As it is wisely said,
“My last day at school was a big relief
indeed”.
The students of 9th/1st and 10th/12th class assembled in a hall accompanied with our class teacher, headmaster himself and several other teachers. The meeting was presided over by the Headmaster/Principal. The students of 9th/1st class expressed their feelings through speeches and songs. The parting songs were very touching. They moved me to tears.
Most of the teachers wished us to come out with flying
colours in the coming examination. They laid stress on our hard work, sincerity
and boldness for facing the examination. The lovable teachers expressed their
regret to miss us. As it is
wisely said,
“Goodbyes
are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end.
They
simply mean, I will miss you until we meet again”.
Then a student from 10th/12th class representing the class said that we would always love our school/college. We would be prepared to make every sacrifice for the school/college. We would never do anything unworthy. We would never tarnish the fair name of the school/college.
In the end, our Headmaster/Principal came and gave us a suitable address. All listened to him with rapt attention. There was a pin- drop silence. His last words were,
"Go out as torch-bearers of light and
knowledge.
Go out to serve your, country and nation.
Assert (declare) yourself. Go ahead and
God will help you."
After that, we were served with samosas,
fruit-chat, cakes, sweets, bottles and etc.
The department of the school/college offered up a prayer for our success in the examination. It was followed by actual party. The teachers stood in a line. We bowed low to all our teachers, paid them our last respects and homage, got their blessings and then parted with heavy hearts. They said,
"Boys, make the best of the time at
your disposal (removal).
Be prepared for the worst and hope for the
best."
As we were to leave the premises (building) of the school/college, tears began rolling down our cheeks. The students of class 9th/1st and the teachers could not stop sobbing because of their intimacy with us, A sense of depression prevailed over us as we had spent a greater part of our career there, which was called the best part of our boyhood. The last look of the school/college building made our hearts having as many memories had been there with it. As it is said,
“My feelings at that time
were a mixture of happiness and unhappiness”.
We promised before the school/college teachers to keep up the prestige of the school by our sincere efforts. We thanked them for their good wishes. Our photographs were taken by the photographer as reminiscence (memories) for the school/college. Indeed, it seemed to me as if the school was a living memory. The meeting ended with a lot of fun and merry making.
Before leaving the school, I decided to have a last view of my school/college. I spent a good time there. At that time, my eyes filled up with tears.
“Farewell my friends
Farewell my foes
My peace with these
My love with those”
