Essay No 35

Population Explosion

Or Over Population

OUTLINE: (For BA Students)

1. The population of a country is one of the sources of its strength.

2. Rapid increase in population has become a serious problem for all the governments of the world.

3. It hampers (hinders) the economic development of a country.

4. It creates unemployment and many other social evils.

5. Government should encourage family planning to check and control population.

As, some-one has wisely said,

“Overpopulation is the mother of all problems in the country.

Solve it as soon as possible; your all problems will be solved.”

Population of a country is one of the sources of its strength. It supplies men for its armed forces, industry, agriculture, administration and other social, economic and political activities. If a country gives proper education and training to its millions of people, they can earn and produce not only for themselves but also for the world at large. The increased production and export of goods can thus make this country rich and strong. But the size of the population should be well within the means of the country to support it. Only then a country can make progress. As, some-one has rightly said,

“Overpopulation is a root problem of all the environmental issues.

If you can control the population, you can control almost anything.”

Rapid population growth poses a serious threat to the economics of poor and developing countries like Pakistan. It has many disadvantages for the economic progress of the country. First, since the resources of national income are limited, the rapid addition (تیزی سے اضافہ) in eating mouths leads to the scarcity (کمی) of essential commodities (ضروری اشیاء). Thus the food problem in Pakistan has become chronic (old) in nature. Every year, the government has to spend millions of rupees on the import of eatables like, wheat, sugar, edible oils etc. As, it is wisely said,

The strongest witness is the vast population of the Earth to which
we are a burden and she scarcely can provide for our needs.

Valuable foreign exchange spent on the import of these things can be spent more profitably on the import of machinery and other goods needed for developmental activities. It is also responsible for the problem of widespread unemployment and constantly rising prices in Pakistan. The government is finding it difficult to provide the facilities of schools, hospitals, roads, houses etc to ever increasing number of people. If this state of affairs continues, it will result in general unrest and political revolution. As, some-one has wisely said,

“The problem of the growing food shortage cannot be solved without,
in many cases a simultaneous effort to moderate population growth.”

The statistical data collected recently shows that the population of Pakistan has doubled during the last ten years. This is alarming indeed. There is a great need to have effective check of population growth. Majority of people are illiterate and orthodox (traditional). They believe that God Himself is responsible for providing a livelihood to all the living creatures. They do not know that God has made man independent and fully responsible for what he does. We are quite free to make life better or worse for ourselves. As, some-one has rightly said,

“The biggest obstacle was mixing abortion with overpopulation.
These are two things that have nothing to do with each other.”

If man acts wisely in other fields of life, why not in this regard also. A poor man should not have large family. In this age of new fashions and high price, it is very difficult for large families to have good standard of living. It is desirable that government should take positive steps to control population. As, some-one has wisely said,

“Strategies for future will not be sufficient unless,

The growth in human population is simultaneously curtailed.”
