Kashmir Problem

Or Kashmir Issue

OUTLINE: (For BA Students)

1. Kashmir is a large area on the northern border of India. It has been the centre of dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947.

2. The Maharaja of Kashmir sold it to India for a small amount of money and announced his decision to make it a part of India.

3. In 1947, soon after the establishment of Pakistan, a war started between the Kashmir freedom fighters and India.

4. A freedom movement started in occupied Kashmir in 1988.

5. The Indian military soldiers wrote down a tale of cruelty and injustice in Kashmir.

6. The Kashmir problem poses a great threat to the world peace.

7. The U.N.O decided to hold a plebiscite (استصواب رائے) in Kashmir. But India did not follow the resolution of U.N.O.

Once some-one has wisely said about Kashmir,

“There is heaven on earth.

It is here, it is here in Kashmir.”

Kashmir, is a large area on the northern border of India. It has been the centre of dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. More than 7 million people live in Kashmir, but about a fourth of them belong to other religions, including Hinduism. Culturally, both the Hindus and the Muslims belong to the same group, with the same language and custom. As some-one has wisely said about Kashmir,

“Kashmir is not just a piece of land, it’s an emotion.”

The capitals of Kashmir are Srinagar in the summer and Jammu in the winter season. Before the partition of the sub-continent, an absolute monarch (a Hind Raja) ruled over Kashmir. The Maharaja of Kashmir sold it to India for a small amount of money and announced his decision to make it a part of India. Imran Khan has rightly said,

“India is using troops in Kashmir.

They are losing the battle of heart and minds.

It's like treating cancer with dispirin.”

According to the Two-nation Theory, Kashmir was the part of Pakistan because most of its population consisted of Muslims. In 1947, soon after the establishment of Pakistan, a war started between the Kashmiri freedom fighters and India. Pakistan fought on the side of the freedom fighters and forced India to go to UNO and apply for cease-fire. War raged until 1949, when the United Nations arranged a cease-fire and set up a truce line.

Shahid Afridi has wisely said,

Kashmir belongs to the Kashmiris.

Not to Indians. Not to Pakistanis.

The line left the North-western part of Kashmir under Pakistan control. Pakistan called it, Azad Kashmir. The rest of the area was occupied by India. It was decided by UNO that the future of Kashmir would be decided be a plebiscite (استصواب رائے). Since then, India did not abide by the agreement, executed by UNO between the two countries. Once, Salman Rushdie has rightly said about Kashmir issue,

There are things you break that can't be put back together again.

And Kashmir may be one of them.

In 1957, a new constitution was adopted by India. It established Kashmir as a part of

India. Pakistan objected to it strongly. A freedom movement started in occupied Kashmir in 1988. The freedom fighters resisted the aggression committed by the Indian military soldiers. The Indian military soldiers wrote down a tale of cruelty and injustice in Kashmir. They murdered innocent men, women and children of Kashmir. They disgraced and molested (بےعزتی) young girls and committed untold atrocities (مظالم) and tortures (اذیتیں) on them. As, some-one has rightly said about the people of Kashmir,

“Whenever you go to Kashmir, you find people,

who are gentle and soft-spoken.”

In 1993, the freedom movement entered a new phase when the Indian soldiers attacked Hazrat Bull Shrine in Srinagar. The freedom movement is still going on in Kashmir with full force and strength. The Kashmir problem has the following dangers for the world peace.

1. The problem of Kashmir has become a flash point for the peace and security of the region. It may generate nuclear war between India and Pakistan. Since both, India and Pakistan are atomic powers, it is likely that India in its frustration and nervousness may take recourse to nuclear war. The nuclear war may spread in other parts of the world. There is a possibility that this war may drag other Muslim countries, like Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia, into it. Once, Pervez Musharraf has rightly said about Kashmir issue,

We must learn from history, there is no military solution for the Kashmir issue...

We have to understand this reality.

2. India and Pakistan are still on the road to progress in the economic, social and cultural fields. The people of both countries are leading a life of misery and suffering. They live below human level. Both the countries are spending the major part of their budgets on the advancement of military aggression. This huge amount of money can be spent to root out poverty and misery from their countries. Once some-one has rightly said about Kashmir,

“The Beauty of Kashmir cannot be compared with the whole world.”

3. The constant hostility (enmity) between the two countries gives a chance to the big powers to exploit the situation whenever they like. Both the countries have become a comfortable and profitable market for the sale of expensive weapons. Both the countries are at the mercy of the big powers. The solution of Kashmir problem needs immediate attention of the UNO and big powers. If the world peace is not going to be risked, the world powers must intervene (interfere) and solve the problem. Once some-one has rightly said about Kashmir,

"As a historical legacy, the Kashmir conflict has been

an outstanding issue for more than half a century."
