Essay No 23

My Hobby

It is said that happiness walks on busy feet. So, to remain happy, one must indulge in some useful activity even in his free time. Sitting idle can prove to be very damaging for the mind, so one must have a constructive hobby for one’s leisure time. As, it is rightly said,

“Inside me is a person who lives all alone.

He is responsible for my actions and decisions and

He feeds on the activity, I do in my spare time.”

People have different hobbies according to their taste. Some love to sit in the lap of nature, some like to collect stamps. Others like to collect stones, animal and plants species etc. My hobby is to collect greatest of all treasures "Books". I collect books and spend my free time in their company. As it is wisely said,

“Books add a lot to our knowledge.

They are our best friends.”

My parents and teachers advised me to develop a habit of book reading from an early age. Since my childhood, I have been taking out a book from my collection and spending my time in its company. Whenever I am depressed or worried, my books divert my attention from my tensions. When my friends fail to help me overcome my anxiety, my books take my hand and make me enter a new world of imagination. As it is rightly said,

“Reading of books is a pleasure

but to own them is bliss.”

My hobby takes me to a place where I enjoy and learn great secrets of life. My hobby of book reading has made me creative and imaginative. My hobby influences me to create a new world like that in my imagination. “Walter” a famous editor tells that book reading motivated him to live a happy life. As it is wisely said,

I could read a book, and I could be anywhere.

I could imagine myself out of the slums.

My bobby has many advantages. It saves me from bad company and the consequent tragic loss. It has lubricated my mind and enhanced my vocabulary. I can better understand the current affairs and the literature by virtue of my hobby. By reading different books, I have won quiz programmes, speech contests and essay writing competitions. My hobby has improved my communication skills at social level. My self-confidence is also enhanced. In short, book reading has polished every aspect of my personality. My hobby has made me able to move in society with dignity. As it is rightly said,

"If you want to improve the world, first improve yourself.

If you want to improve yourself, read a book."

Previously, I used to read novels and fiction only. But now I have started reading books on different topics. Books on history, science, biography and philosophy have enhanced my knowledge. I love to read the "Tafasirs of the Holy Quran and the Hadith, which make me able to grasp true spirit of Islam. As it is wisely said,

“Books are king's treasures- treasures filled,

not with gold or silver, but with the most valuable

riches of all, knowledge, noble thoughts and high ideas.”

Books on science help me to perform well in examination. I also read magazines and newspapers. Reading the life of the Quaid-e-Azam influences me as he is my ideal. It is very important to choose a right book and then reading it for pleasure, gaining solid knowledge and a moral lesson. As it is rightly said,

“A room without a book is like a body without a soul.”

Concluding, I would like to say that my hobby is very beneficial for me. When my mind is weary, I find it a healthy recreation to lose myself in some absorbing story by a master hand. As, it is wisely said,

"Rainy day must be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book."

So, I choose to be with my books whenever I get time for myself. I should spend my loneliness with them. They are my friends with no complaints and problems. I owe them for my happiness, pleasure, leisure and gain of respect and love in my teacher's hearts to them. As it is rightly said,

“Reading nothing but fiction is like eating nothing

but cakes and sweet meats.”
