Essay No 22

My First Day at College

Remembering past is the most alluring thing in life. We always recollect our past to amuse ourselves. The sweet memories of the past are like the sweet perfumes of the flowers in spring season. A sensible person cannot forget his past, the places he visited, moments he loved and wondrous moments of life. As, it is rightly said,

“A good life is a collection of happy memories.”

During my school days, I was the monitor of my class. I was an intelligent student and my parents gave me confidence to take decision. I passed a very hardworking school-life. During my school days, my friends used to tell me about freedom and enjoyment of college life. I started dreaming of the college life. As, it is wisely said,

“How beautiful is youth! How bright it gleams

With its illusions, aspirations and dreams!

It was the month of August, when my metric result was announced. I got A+ grade.

My friend Niaz and I went to get prospectus of different colleges. We selected the best colleges of our city. Our names were in the first list of a historical college of Lahore, where I got admission. As, it is rightly said,

“You send your child to the college.

But it is the college, not boys who educate him."

I was excited about my first day at college. At night, I pressed my uniform. I polished my shoes. I prepared my college bag with stationery and books. I went to Niaz's residence. We decided to leave for early in the morning. At night, I could not sleep at ease. On bed, I was thinking about college life impatiently. I got up early in the morning. I was in a hurry to reach my college. As, it is wisely said,

“Fathers send their sons to college either because

they went to college or they didn't.”

A big iron gate stood open in front of me. Old building of 18 century had a magical effect. But at the entrance of the college, there was a cemented stage with a grassy land. A professor was reading some hadith from a book, many students were gathered there. After fifteen minutes, the professor closed the book and the session ended. I was expecting something like school assembly but it did not happen. Being a Pre Medical Student, I was guided by other group fellows. As, it is rightly said,

Youth is the book of Beginning, story without End,

Each maid is heroine, and each man a friend.”

Our time table and roll No were completely displayed on notice board. I was surprised to read about different blocks in college premises. I had spent my school life in one room for the whole day. My first class was of Chemistry. I did not like the behavior and method of Chemistry professor.  There was no attraction in his lecture. I was very nervous. As, it is wisely said,

“Education is not the filling of a pot,

but the lighting of a fire.”

For the next class, I moved to another block of our college. An English professor was already there. He was a pleasant looking man who taught and impressed us by his politeness.

I thanked Allah for such a nice lecturer. Our next class was free. I went to the college library.

I was feeling wonder to see thousands of books in hundreds of almirahs. There were many students reading books by the big central table but no noise.

This impressed me a lot. As, it is rightly said,

“A good teacher can inspire hope, set fire to the imagination,

and instill a love of learning.”

My next three classes were also conducted in different rooms. I got tired due to so much walking during class intervals. My friend told me, "This is college life dear. Enjoy it.” My friend and I ate delicious Naan-chanay from our college canteen. As, it is wisely said,

“College life has inspired me the most.

College life has given me confidence that I need to fly.”

When I was returning to my home, I was thinking about the personality and teaching method of different lecturers. I was giving points and ranking to them. I was much tired after a long travelling in local bus. At the same time, I was quite happy that I had successfully spent my first day at college. It is real that college life is very different from school life. I can never forget my first day at college. As, it is rightly said,

“All the really valuable things,

you own are things you cannot photograph.”
