The Gulistan of Sa'di

Q. 1. What was the advice given by Nushirvan to his people? (L.B 2015, 2016)

Ans. Nushirvan advised his people to avoid even the little acts of evil and oppression. He asked them to be just and honest. He said if establishment would commit some minor fault, their followers would enlarge it. A leader or King should be more careful in making decision, as it affects the subjects or his followers a lot.

Q. 2. What was the remedy suggested by physicians for the disease of the king? (L.B 2013)

Ans. The physicians suggested that the disease of the king could be cured by means of bile of a person having certain qualities. Orders were issued to search for an individual of these certain qualities.

Q. 3. Why did the boy look to the sky and smile? (L.B 2015, G.B 2015)

Ans. The boy looked to the affection of his parents. Parents sacrificed all for their offspring, but in the present case, they agreed to shed his blood for the trash of the world. The Qazi had issued a decree to kill him. In this situation, he had no refuge besides Allah Almighty. Therefore, he looked toward the sky and smiled in order to seek justice from Allah Almighty.

Q. 4. What should be the role of Qazi? (L.B 2014, G.B 2013)

Ans. A Qazi should be just, honest and fair. He should not favour anyone unduly. He should do justice to both the rich and the poor. He should be impartial.

Q. 5. Why did the king weep?

Ans. The speech of the boy impressed the king. He realized his cruelty and selfishness. The boy's speech made the king realized his fault and he burst into tears after hearing the complaint of an innocent boy.

Q. 6. How did the King recover? (L.B 2015)

Ans. The king recovered within a week after letting the boy free. The king kissed the head and eyes of the boy and presented him with a lot of wealth. God liked his good action and repentance. God blessed him with health for his mercy.

Ans. On the advice of the physicians, the Qazi issued a decree to shed the blood of an innocent boy for the health of the king. According to physicians, the health of the king was possible only with the help of bile of the boy having certain qualities.

Q. 2. Why did the king order to pay for such a trivial thing like salt? (G.B 2014)

Ans. The king ordered to pay for the salt so that it might not become a custom and the village might be ruined. He said that the foundation of oppression was small in the world. Whoever enlarged it, so that it reached its present magnitude.

Q. 3. What should be the role of king? (L.B 2013)

Ans. The king should be honest, pious and just in his decision. He should not give undue favour to anyone. He should be careful about his subject.

Q. 4. Why did the Persian slave create inconvenience for other passengers? (L.B 2012)

Ans. The Persian slave had no experience of sea journey. When the boat was hit by storm, it started tossing and created inconvenience for other passengers. The slave began to cry and tremble. Others tried to pacify him with kindness and affection but he did not listen to anybody.

Q. 5. What does Emerson say about the Gulistan of Saadi? (G.B 2012)

Ans: Emerson says that he considers the Gulitan of Saadi as one of the bibles of the world. He found in it universality of moral laws.
