Q. 1. How much did she save for Christmas?

Ans. She could save only one dollar and eighty seven cents. In her careful buying of goods and bargaining over each and every penny, she could save just this amount. The next day was Christmas.

Q. 2. Why did she feel proud in the beauty of her hair?

Ans. Della felt pride in the beauty of her hair due to the following reasons:

Ø It looked like a falling stream of brown water.

Ø It reached below her knee.

Ø It almost made itself into a dress for her.

Ø It was more beautiful than any queen's jewels and gifts.

Q. 3. Why did she sell her hair? (L.B 2016, G.B 2012)

Ans. She sold her hair to get money to buy a beautiful watch chain for Jim. She could not live through Christmas without giving him a gift.

Q. 4 . Why did Jim sell his gold watch? (L.B 2012, 2013, 2014, G.B 2015)

Ans. He sold his watch to get money to buy a beautiful comb embedded with jewels for Della. He could not live through Christmas without giving her a gift.

Q. 5. Why did they want to exchange the gifts?

Ans. Christmas was an occasion of celebration. Della and Jim had great love for each other and they could not think of celebrating Christmas without presenting the gifts.

Q. 6. Why did she feel sad on losing her hair? (L.B 2015)

Ans. She felt sad on losing her hair because she thought that Jim would not like her with that short hair. She was looking like a school boy. She knew that Jim used to love and like her beautiful hair with deep emotions. She feared that Jim might not love her without her beautiful hair.

Q. 7. Why did Jim not welcome her when he stepped in?

Ans. Jim did not welcome her because he was stunned to see Della in short hair. He had bought beautiful combs for her long hair but she had cut her hair off.

Q. 8. What did he bring out of his coat?

Ans. Jim brought out beautiful combs tied in a piece of paper for Della from his coat-pocket. That was the same combs that Della had seen and loved without the least hope of owning them in a shop window.

Q. 9. How beautiful was the gold watch chain?

Ans. It was simply made but its value was in its rich and pure material. Jin and the chain both had quietness and value. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. It showed the fabulous feelings of Della's love.

Q. 10. What was the wisdom in selling the most valuable things? (L.B 2007, 2013, G.B 2013, 2014)

Ans. Both the lovers knew that their relation was more valuable than valuable things. Love demands sacrifice. They wisely sold their valuable things to strengthen their love by exchanging gifts.

Ans. Della was disappointed as her saving was little. Della wanted to buy a gift for Jim at Christmas. Next day was Christmas. There was nothing to do but fall on the bed and cry.

Ans. Magi are also called "Wise Men of the East". They came to pay homage to the newborn Christ Child, bringing with them gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
