A Mild Attack of Locusts

Q. 1. What are locusts? (G.B 2015)

Ans. Locusts are small insects that eat crops and trees terribly even from the root. It is a natural calamity for agriculture. They attack in groups and destroy vegetation within a short time.

Q. 2. Why did farmers throw wet leaves on fire?

Ans. The farmers were throwing wet leaves onto the fire to make the smoke acrid and black. They did not want the locusts to see their crops and vegetables below. They wanted that the locusts might settle somewhere else.

Q. 3. What was the desire of every farmer? (L.B 2016)

Ans. Every farmer hoped and desired that the locusts should overlook his farm and go onto the next. None of the farmers wanted to see his farms got destroyed by the locusts.

Q. 4. Did Margaret know what to do to keep the locusts away?

Ans. She did not know anything to keep the locusts away. It was her first experience. She just stood and gazed at the sad spectacle of devastated and mangled countryside.

Q. 5. What was the condition of trees?

Ans. All the trees were queer and still, clotted with insects, their boughs weighed to the ground. The branches of trees were snapping off. The trees began to settle down heavily to the ground.

Q. 6. How did the old Stephen treat the stray locusts?

Ans. He picked stray locusts off his shirt and split it down. It was clotted inside with eggs. He pointed Margaret to imagine the number of those eggs multiplied by millions.

Q. 7. Are the hoppers different from the locusts?

Ans. The hoppers are the young locusts, while the locusts are full grown insects. They are born when the locusts lay eggs. They cannot fly and just march on the earth.

Q. 8. Did Margaret lose heart on the loss of crops? (G.B 2012) Or Why was Margaret worried? (G.B 2014)

Ans. Yes, Margaret lost heart on the loss of Crops. She preferred not even to think of them. She was trying to get used to the idea of three or four years of locusts. She felt like a survivor after war. We came to know about her mental situation by her saying;

"For the Lord's sake," said Margaret angrily, still half-crying, "what here is bad enough isn't it?"

Q. 9. Why are locusts compared with bad weather? (L.B 2007, G.B 2015, 2016)

Ans. Locusts are going to be like bad weather, from now on, always imminent because they destroy the vegetables and crops just like storms, floods, and earthquakes. Both attack without any intimation.

Q. 10. Why did the men eat their supper with good appetites? (L.B 2016)

Ans. They were tired because they had tried hard to save their crops. They also thought that it could have been worse. So, they ate their supper with savor.

Ans. He told her that they were finished. The locusts could eat every leaf and blade of grass in just half an hour. It they could make enough noise and smoke, the locusts might settle somewhere else.
