Ozymandias

Q. 1. Whom did the poet meet in the poem 'Ozymandias?

Ans. The poet met a traveller who had come from an ancient land.

Q. 2. Where did the traveller see stone legs? (LB.2009, 11)

Ans. He saw two big trunkless legs of stone standing in the desert.

Q. 3. What moral lesson do we learn from the poem? (LB. 2007, 10) (GWB. 2011)

Ans. The poem teaches us that we should not forget the mortality of this life. Time brings an end to everything. We should not become proud of our power because everybody has to die one day.

Q. 4. What is the theme or central idea of the poem? (LB. 2007, 11)

Ans. The poem teaches us that man becomes proud after getting power. He forgets that ultimately all his activities will come to an end.  Death is the greatest fact of life. It also shows that man is mortal but art remains in this world.

Q. 5. What did the traveller see near legs of stone?

Ans. He saw a crushed stone face half sunk in the sand near them.

Q. 6. What kind of expressions did the statue have?

Ans. The expressions on the face showed that he must be a proud and cruel.

Q. 7. What sort of sculptor did create the statue?

Ans. The sculptor must be a skilful person because the features of the face were very clear.

Q. 8. What was the name written on the pedestal of the statue? (FSB. 2009)

Ans. The name “Ozymandias” was written on the pedestal of the statue.

Q. 9. Who was Ozymandias?

Ans. Ozymandias was a king.

Q. 10. What do the words inscribed on the Pedestal suggest?

Ans. The words suggest that time is merciless to all merciless. It brings everything an end.

Q. 11. What spreads around the remnants of the Statue?

Ans. Only sands stretch far away around the decay.

Q. 12. What does the king Ozymandias remind the powerful people of the world/time?

Ans. It reminds them that death is a greatest fact of this world. It tells them that they will easily lose hope if they compare his powerful life with that of his tragic end. They must learn a lesson and become humble persons.

  3) Method of Imperative Sentences Recognition : - The reported speech of these sentences always starts with 1 st form of verb.
