A Tale of Two Cities

Q. 1. What sort of storms did the people face?

Ans. They faced storms of shrills, arms, smoke and drills.

Q. 2. How did the storms affect the people?

Ans. They were all injured, burnt, afraid, powerless and helpless.

Q. 3. How were the people of two cities made powerless? (L.B. 2010, GWB. 2009)

Ans. The people were powerless due to massive destruction because atomic bombs were thrown on the two cities by the Americans. Every living being was smashed by the evil technology.

Q. 4. How did the hills look?

Ans. The hills looked sad and gloomy.

Q. 5. Who consoled the miserable people?

Ans. There was nobody to share their grief.

Q. 6. How was the atmosphere all around?

Ans. The towers and flavours had lost their charms. There was nothing left behind.

Q. 7. Who was responsible for taking lives of two glories?

Ans. No eye could look the explosion that took the lives of two glories.

Q. 8. What did a wild nation do in her fury?

Ans. A wild nation did not care for the human rights in her fury and destroyed everything.

Q. 9. Who were those who bore the pains of black day?

Ans. They were very great people as they bore the pains of black day.

Q. 10. What can “Ashes” do?

Ans. Ashes can really create great.

Q. 11. What is the message of the poem, “A Tale of Two Cities”? (L.B. 2011)

Ans. The poet preaches that man should renounce the use of destructive weapons. He emphasizes that those who work hard to regain their lost strength finally become successful. They should work with determination to gain honour.

Q. 12. Why did the people of two cities look powerless and helpless? (LB. 2012)

Ans. The people looked powerless due to massive destruction because atomic bombs were thrown on the two cities by the Americans. Every living being was smashed by the evil technology.

Q. 13. Under what conditions the victims had to pass through?

Ans. They had to pass through inexplicable misery and distress. Their lives and properties were reduced to ashes. Moreover, there was nobody who came for their rescue.

Q. 14. What is the theme of the poem?

Ans. The poem gives expression to the sufferings of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed by the atomic bomb. At the same time, the poet praises the Japanese nation that did not lose heart.
