5) Method of Optative Sentences

Recognition:-

The reported speech of these sentences always starts with “may or would that”.

These sentences show the sense of pray, curse or wish.

Changes

i)             At the place of “said” write “prayed, cursed, wished”,

according to the sense of the sentence.

At the place of “said to” write “prayed for, cursed for, wished for”,

according to the sense of the sentence.

ii) At the place of “Commas” write “that”.

iii) After “that” the sentence is written in simple sense and a full stop is put at the end.

Ø   Change of pronoun, tense and certain words occur according to the Method.

Ø   Direct Speech: -    He said to me, “May you live long”.

Indirect Speech: - He prayed for me that I might live long.

6)       Method of Exclamatory sentences

Recognition:-

The reported speech of these sentences always starts with, “Hurrah!, Alas!, Aha!,

Oh!, Bravo!, How----! and what-----!”.

These sentences show the sudden feelings of joy, sorrow or wonder.

Changes:-

i)             At the place of “said or said to” write, exclaimed with joy, exclaimed with sorrow

or exclaimed with wonder according to the sense of the sentence.

ii) At the place of “Commas” write “that”.

ii)          The words like, Hurrah, Alas, Aha, Oh, Bravo, How and what are removed.

iii)        What, How------------- very

iv) The sentence which shows “wonder” is written in simple sentence.

Ø   Change of pronoun, tense and certain words occur according to the Method.

Ø   Direct Speech: -   He said, “Hurrah! I have passed”.

Indirect Speech: - He exclaimed with joy that he had passed.

1.             She said to her father, “May you live long!”

She prayed for her father that he might live long.

2.             She said, “May you prosper!”

She prayed that I might prosper.

3.             The mother said to her daughter, “May God bless you with a son!”

The mother prayed for her daughter that God might bless her with a son.

4.             She said, “Would that my father were alive!”

She wished that her father had been alive.

5.             The mother said to her son, “May you return successful!”

The mother prayed for her son that he might return successful.

6.             She said, “What a beautiful piece of art this is!”

She exclaimed with wonder that piece of art was very beautiful.

7.             He said, “How well she sang!”

He exclaimed with wonder that she had sung very well.

8.             He said, “Alas! We cannot defeat our enemies.”

He exclaimed with sorrow that they could not defeat their enemies.

9.             She said, “What a pity! You missed that function.”

She exclaimed with wonder that I missed that function.

10.        He said, “Hurrah! I have won the medal.”

He exclaimed with joy that he had won the medal.
