Parts of Speech

Words are divided into different into different kinds or classes, according to their use or work, they do in a sentence which are called

Parts of Speech”,  such as.

1. Noun.     2. Adjective.                   3. Pronoun           4. Verb

5. Adverb   6. Preposition       7. Conjunction     8. Interjection

9. Articles

1. Noun

A noun is the name of a person, thing or a place, such as, Ali, Naveed,  Nasreen.

·        Akbar was a great King.

·        The sun shines bright.

·        His courage won him honour.

2. Adjective

The word which is used to add something to the meaning of a noun is called an “adjective” such as,

·        This is a beautiful flower.

·         Akber was a great king.

·        He is a brave boy.

3. Pronoun

The word which is used at the place of a noun is called a “pronoun” such as, he, she, we, I, they, you, etc.

·        John is absent because he is ill.

·        The books are where you left them.

·        Boys running fast because they want to catch the train.

4. Verb

The word which shows an action is called a “verb” such as, go, write, play, read.

·        The girl writes a letter to her cousin.

·        They play cricket in the ground.

·        I read stories.

5.  Adverb

The word which is used, to add something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb is called an “adverb” such as,         

·                    He solved the sum quickly.

·                    This flower is very beautiful.

·                    She pronounced the word quite correctly.

6.  Preposition

          The word which is used with a noun or a pronoun to show some relation with another noun, pronoun or something else, is called “preposition” such as,

·        There is a cow in the garden.

·        The girl is fond of music.

·        A fair little girl sat under a tree.

7. Conjunction

The word which is used to join two or more words or sentences is called “conjunction” such as,

·        Aslam and Ali are cousins.

·        I ran fast but missed the train.

·        I can not come to the school, because I am ill.

8. Interjection

          The word which is used to show the sudden feelings of joy, sorrow or wonder is called “interjection” such as;

·        Hurrah! We have won the game.

·        Alas! She is dead.

·        Aha!  I have passed.

9. Articles

The word which is used with a noun to show it particular or singular is called “article” such as; a, an, the.

“A, An” are indefinite articles whereas “the” is definite article.
