The Sentence
A group
of words which gives (makes) complete sense is called a sentence.
Kinds of Sentence
Sentences
are of six kinds:
1.
Affirmative/Declarative or Assertive Sentence
The
sentence which gives (makes) sense is called a Declarative (Assertive)
sentence, such as,
·
It is a
book.
·
She
makes tea for me.
·
They are
playing cricket.
2. Negative Sentence
The
sentence which gives (makes) negative sense is called a Negative sentence, such as,
·
It is
not a book.
·
She does
not make tea for me.
·
They are
not playing cricket.
3. Interrogative Sentence
The
sentence which asks a question is called an Interrogative sentence, such
as,
·
Is it a
book?
·
Does she
make tea for me?
·
Are they
playing cricket?
4. Imperative Sentence
The
sentence which gives (shows) a sense of order, request, advice and forbidden
(forbade) is called an Imperative sentence, such as,
·
Open the
door.
·
Do not
tell a lie.
·
Write an
interesting story.
(These
sentences always start with 1st form of verb.)
5. Optative Sentence
The
sentence which gives (shows) a sense of pray, curse or wish is called optative sentence, such as,
·
May you
live long.
· May you go to hell.
·
Would
that I had succeeded.
6. Exclamatory Sentence
The
sentence which shows sudden feeling of joy, sorrow or wonder is called an Exclamatory
sentence, such as,
·
Hurrah!
I have passed.
·
Oh! I
have lost my purse.
·
Alas!
She is dead.
(These sentences
always start with Hurrah, Alas, Oh, and Ah.)
