The Woodcutter And His
Axe
Once
there lived a poverty-stricken woodcutter in a village. He was very poor but he
was honest. He was very famous for his honesty and integrity. He knew,
“The eye of a greedy man and the belly
of a glutton are never satisfied.”
He
had a large family to support. He was the sole bread earner. He used to go to
the bank of a river to cut wood. He cut the wood and sold it in the market. He
always thanked God for his hard
earned livelihood. As, it is
wisely said,
“No legacy is so rich as honesty.”
One day he was cutting the
branches of a tree on the bank of the river. Unfortunately, his axe slipped
from his hand and fell into the river. He did not know how to swim. After
losing the only source of living, he started mourning at his fate. He started
to cry. As, it is wisely said,
“Disappointment to the soul is as
what a thunderstorm is to the air.”
Hearing
this, an angel appeared there and asked, why he was weeping. The woodcutter told
it that his only axe had fallen into the river. The angel took pity on him and
jumped into the river. After a while, he brought out an axe of gold. The angel
asked the woodcutter if it was his axe. The woodcutter refused to accept it and
said that it was not his axe. As, it is wisely said,
“Truthfulness is the tree that grows
deep
And gives the sweetest fruit.”
The angel
jumped into the river for the second time and brought out an axe of silver. The
woodcutter again refused to
take it, as it was not his. The angel dived for the third time and brought out
an iron axe. As soon as, he saw his own axe, he jumped with joy. He took it at
once and thanked the angel for his kindness. The angel was much impressed with
his honesty and gave him the other two axes as a reward of his honesty. As,
some-one has rightly said,
“Honesty is the highest form of
intimacy.”

Honesty Is The Best
Policy
The Woodcutter And His
Axe
“Honesty is the best policy” is a well-known proverb. It
means that one should always be honest, truthful and righteous (just) in his
daily activities. The path of honesty and truth is bound with trial and
tribulations but the ultimate goal is always good. An honest man is always
rewarded in every field of life. As, it is wisely said,
“Honesty is the highest form of
intimacy.”
The
story of a woodcutter and the angel shows the essence of the above given proverb
that
how a person was repaid for
his honesty. Once there lived a poverty-stricken woodcutter in a
village. He was very poor but
he was honest. He was very famous for his honesty and integrity. He knew,
“The eye of a greedy man and the belly
of a glutton are never satisfied.”
He
had a large family to support. He was the sole bread earner. He used to go to

wisely said,
“No legacy is so rich as honesty.”

from his hand and fell into the river. He did not know how to swim. After
losing the only source of living, he started mourning at his fate. He started
to cry. As, it is wisely said,
“Disappointment to the soul is as
what a thunderstorm is to the air.”
His
mourning bore fruit and an angel appeared there and asked, why he was weeping.
The woodcutter narrated the whole incident and requested the angel to help him
in this miserable situation. The angel took pity on him and jumped into the
river. After a while, he brought out
an axe of gold. The angel
asked the woodcutter if it was his axe. The woodcutter refused to accept it and
said that it was not his axe. As, it is wisely said,
“Truthfulness is the tree that grows

And gives the sweetest fruit.”
The angel
