As You Sow, so Shall You Reap

Always Respect Your Parents

Barkat was a very old man. He lived with his son who was great business man. He dined with the rest of his family. He always spoiled the table-cloth by dropping one thing or the other over it. His son and daughter-in-law did not like that.

Therefore, they decided to seat him in a corner and to give him his meal in an earthen pot in future. The next day, when the servant gave the old man his meal, tears welled up in his eyes. He was very sad over his son's behaviour. His hands trembled and the earthen dish fell down. His son said, “I cannot buy a pot for him everyday. Let him have his meal in a wooden dish from tomorrow.” Barkat now used to take his meal in a wooden dish.

One day, “he saw grandson fitting together some pieces of wood”. The old man asked, “What are you making, my boy?” The clever child replied, “I am making a wooden dish for father and mother, to feed them, when I grow up.”

His parents over-heard it. They learnt a lesson from their son. They began to treat the old man with great respect and served him to the best of their ability.
