A Rolling Stone Gathers no Moss

Birds and animals had always been rivals. Once, they sat together and thought of choosing a common leader. The leader was to be elected by majority vote as,

"Majority is authority."

Two candidates moved forward. The eagle was represented by the birds and the lion was represented by the animals. In the voters, the bat gained importance for both the parties. The bat changed sides for several times. She wanted to support the possible winner. As, it is wisely said,

"He who changes his loyalty and his friends,

again and again can never win an honourable place."

It was difficult to predict the winner. When the bat realized that lion could win, she said,

"I am going to vote for you. In fact, I am an animal because I feed my offspring with milk."

As, it is wisely said,

"Do not behave like those who believe that might is right."

However, when she realized that the eagle enjoyed more support, she went to him and said,

"I am going to vote for you. In fact, I have wings and I lay eggs."

At last, the Election Day came and the lion won the election. All animals were very happy. The bat thought that she had convinced the animals. The animals and birds had true reports. So the

lion said,

"I don't think, you are one of us. You are a bird."

The bat was much upset. Now she went to the eagle. The eagle knew that bat had played

a double game. He said,

"Go away. You feed your offspring and belong to animals."

Now, the bat realized that she because of her over-cleverness had lost the favours of both

the groups.

"A whimsical fellow is destined to fail

to develop a long lasting relationship."

Story for Brilliant Students

A Rolling Stone Gathers no Moss

“A rolling stone gathers no moss” is a very famous proverb. It means that we should be honest and loyal in our dealings because

"He who changes his loyalty and his friends,

again and again can never win an honourable place."

There is a well-known fable to illustrate the truth of this maxim. Birds and animals had always been rivals. Once, they sat together and thought of choosing a common leader. The leader was to be elected by majority vote as,

"Majority is authority."

Two candidates moved forward. The eagle was represented by the birds and the lion was represented by the animals. Their supporters started canvassing for their candidates. In the voters, the bat gained importance for both the parties. The bat changed sides for several times. She was keen to know who had the better chance to win. She wanted to support the possible winner. As, it is wisely said,

"Prosperity wins friends but adversity tries them."

It was difficult to predict the winner. It was a close consent and each day the fortunes seemed to swing one way or the other.

At last, the Election Day came. The lion won the election. All animals were very happy. The bat thought that she had convinced the animals. The animals and birds had true reports. So the

lion said,

Now, the bat realized that she because of her over-cleverness had lost the favours of both

the groups.

"A whimsical fellow is destined to fail

to develop a long lasting relationship."
