Summary

of

“The Rain”

W.H. Davies is an English poet who was born in 1871. He left school at a young period, and lived for a number of years as a peddler (supplier) and a beggar in USA. His first effort of poetry “The Soul’s Destroyer” was printed at his own expense in 1905.

Nature and the hardships of the poor are his favourite themes. This poem also expresses his clear and lovely views about nature and social discriminations. He very beautifully describes the natural phenomena of rain. As it is rightly said,

“The best thing one can do is when it’s raining, let it rain”.

He says that he hears raindrops falling on leaves of trees. He feels as if leaves are drinking raindrops. The rich leaves which are on top, are giving these drops, one by one to the poor leaves beneath. As it is said,

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.”

But

“I always like walking in the rain, so that no one can see me crying.”

The top thick leaves symbolize rich people upon whom the blessings of Allah pour down like shower. But these rich people prove to be very uncharitable (unkind). They give alms (charity) to the poor but in little amounts just like the rich leaves that pass on the rain water drop after drop to the leaves that pass on the rain drops against the thick leaves of trees which produce a sweet and soft music. The poet feels exalted hearing this melodious sound. As it is said,

“A rainy day is the perfect time for a walk in the woods”.

After the rain ceases, the sun comes out of the dark clouds with silvery lining. It shines very bright. It imparts radiance to every dark thing. As some-one has rightly said,

“Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines.”

Nature and the hardships of the poor are his favourite themes. This poem also expresses his clear and lovely views about nature and social discriminations. He very beautifully describes the natural phenomena of rain. As it is rightly said,

“The best thing one can do is when it’s raining, let it rain”.

After the rain ceases, the sun comes out of the dark clouds with silvery lining. It shines very bright. It imparts radiance to every dark thing. As some one has rightly said,

“Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines.”

The drops of rain look fresh, bright and lovely in the bright sunshine. It refreshes the whole surroundings. As the benevolent (kind) sun shines equally upon all, it is also a symbol of life, glory and vitality (strength). The poem is a superb expression of spiritual joy and social discrimination.

“The Rain” is a very beautiful short poem. In this poem, the poet gives us serious message in a few words. It is a short criticism that gives us discrimination (bigotry) between the rich and the poor.

The poet says that rich people are getting all of things they need and they pass unwanted things to the poor or when their appetite (hunger) has been fulfilled give a small amount of alms to the poor. Poet is of the hope that there would be equality in the society just like the sunshine which spreads all over the world giving its shine to everyone even to a dark round drop of rain hidden under a thick and rich green leaves.

“If I were rain,
That joins sky and earth that otherwise never touch,
Could I join two hearts as well?”.
