-- A Rainy Day --

Rain brings rest, relief and rainbow especially when it is the month of July. I still remember a similar day. It was, perhaps, 1st July. The sun was hot and bright. Its rays were like needles pricking our bodies. The wind was like the blast of furnace. Everybody was perspiring from top to toe. Roads and streets were deserted and desolate. Birds, beasts and men all wanted to sit in the shade and drink cold water. With their dry tongues, they were praying for rain. At about four in the evening, a patch of cloud appeared in the sky. As it is said,

How can you tell the rain not to fall
when clouds exist?
How can you tell the leaves not to fall
when wind exists?

Soon cool and pleasant breeze started to blow. Then lightning flashed across the sky and a loud thunder filled the air. With it, the rain began to fall. Within a short time, it was raining by cats and dogs. Everybody heaved a sigh of relief. As it is wisely said,

“The rain in the burning heat of summer is a blessing of God”.

Some boys came out of their houses and began playing in the streets. They were shouting and dancing and were throwing muddy water on one another. When somebody slipped on the road, they laughed heartily, but ran to help him. Everything looked washed and cleaned. The earth was wet and soft. The trees and the grass were fresh and green. As it is rightly said,

“The rain rejoices the thirsty earth

 and blesses the flower buds”.

Small children also got excited. You can easily see them jumping and trying to come out to take a feel of rain. Have you watched the scene on roads when it starts raining, it’s funny scene. Some people try to escape by running. Some try to take shelter under other's roof. But this is all when it is weak rain but when it is heavy rain one has no way. Even umbrellas are insufficient. As it is rightly said,

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.”

In the houses, their own elders were equally happy and were enjoying the rain in their own manner. They prepared traditional sweet dishes. The rain continued for an hour. When it stopped, there appeared rainbow in the sky. As it is rightly said,

“Everyone wants happiness,
no one needs pain,
But its not possible to get a rainbow,
without a little rain”.

The streets were full rushing muddy water. Children came back home. They took off their wet clothes and soaking shoes and washed their bodies with clean water. The rain was, no doubt, a blessing for the weather-beaten and heat stricken people. As it is said,

“Rain showers my spirit and waters my soul”.

But it became a curse for those unfortunate people who were living in mud houses in low lying areas. These areas had keep water. Many mud houses collapsed and a number of children were injured. This is what life tears and laughter go side by side. As it is said,

“Rain is grace; rain is the sky condescending (arrogant) to the earth;

without rain, there would be no life.”

At the end, I would like to say that rain gives new life to the whole atmosphere. Rain gives happiness to the poor and the rich equally. It is the beautiful phenomena of nature. It is charming, fascinating, adoring and joyful beauty. As it is said,

“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.”
