3. Essay My House (10th/12/2nd Year/BA/B. Sc) by AG Ahmad

MY HOUSE

The saying,

“East or West, home is the best”

is true in more ways than one.

Desire for a shelter place is natural in all living creatures. Birds may wander the whole day long but come back their nests in the evening. Cattle may roam about in search of grazing field but return in the evening to their resting place. As it is wisely said,

“Man is considered to be the best of all the creatures”

Therefore, for man, a house is an important necessity. It is nearly impossible to think about the life of man without house. It plays an important role in the life and has wide-ranging effects for a person. It is just like the lap of a mother. A mother’s lap gives comfort to a child and the house also gives comfort to its owners. House offers affection and security. Therefore, what comfort I feel in my house, I do not feel anywhere. As it is rightly said,

“He is the happiest, may be he is king or peasant,

who finds peace in his home.”

By the grace of Allah Almighty, the house in which I live has all those facilities, which must be in a good house. My home to me is the best place in the world, where I live with my family members. As it is wisely said,

“Be grateful for the home you have,

knowing that at this moment, all you have, as all you need.”

My house consists of three rooms. All are joined by a corridor. A verandah on the front and back of the house protects it from sun and rain. The walls of the house are so thick that the heat of the summer sun never manages to reach inside. In winter they become rather cold. As it is rightly said,

"Home" is any four walls that enclose the right person.

My father got this house built for us twenty years ago. As it is wisely said,

“A good home must be made not bought.”

The front veranda leads to two rooms: one is the drawing room; the other is my father, s room. My room is just behind the drawing room. Other rooms are occupied by other members of my family. My father does not like modern furniture which in his opinion, is fragile, ugly and uncomfortable. He has furnished the house with large solid chairs, tables and beds. As it is wisely said,

“For a man the house is his castle

where the king cannot enter.”

My room is perhaps the most modern part of the house. My father allowed me to buy a sofa set and a bookcase with glass front.  My sisters, brothers and I study in the study room. All the rooms are well-lighted and airy. All the floors have marble tiles. My parents have decorated my house with paintings and pictures. As it is said,

“A house is a machine for living in.”

We always keep our house neat and clean. The open terrace is in front of the garden. This makes our house more beautiful. There is also a water-pump in my house. I daily water the plants in the garden. My friends come to my home and we play different games in the garden. As it is rightly said,

“The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it”.

My house is the best house in the colony. So I am very proud of my house. I love my house very much. My house is not a very big or magnificent. Building but it is not like other houses I have seen. It is different. It has all the comforts of life. As it is wisely said,

“A house is a home when it shelters the body

and comforts the soul.”

It has a strange charm for me. I have become so used to living in it that now I do not really feel comfortable anywhere else. As it is rightly said,

“A comfortable house is a great source of happiness.

It ranks immediately after health and a good conscience.”

I have a lot of associations with it, for I have spent my childhood and boyhood in it.

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs

and returns home to find it.
