SPORTS AND GAMES

Some one has wisely said,

“Health is wealth.”

Games and Sports cater to the all-round development of personality, character and health of children. Sound mind is ensured in a sound body. As it is said,

“A sound body has a sound mind”.

Psychologically speaking, sports and games are biological and social necessity for children. They are as important for human body as food, grains and fresh water. They keep us active, healthy and smart. As it is rightly said,

“He who has health has hope and he who has hope has everything”

Sports and games are extra-curricular activities. They are an important part of our school curriculum. They offer us a change from the monotony of daily life. It is a useful means of entertainment and physical activity. Sports and games help in character building.

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it”.

Good sportsmen have promising future to work. So play ground is said to be the "uncovered school" and the "cradle of democracy".

Sports develop a sense of friendship. They develop in us team spirit. They shape our body and make it strong and active. They give us energy and strength. They remove tiredness and lethargy (laziness). They improve our blood circulation which improves our physical well-being. They help in developing mental and physical toughness. According to Hazrat Ali (R.A), the forth caliph of Islam:

“A healthy mind can realize Allah well.”

Games increase the circulation of blood, boost metabolism, burn calories and improve the respiration and digestive system. As it is wisely said,

“Sports are preserver of health”.

Games keep one away from diseases relating to heart, obesity (fatness), mental stress and sleeplessness. They instill in us a spirit of adventure. They instill in the player a spirit of self-confidence, discipline, justice, fair play and patriotism. They provide us with recreation and enjoyment. As it is wisely said,

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy”.

A healthy person can work hard cheerfully for a long period of time, and can face dangers boldly. They enable him to follow other virtues like discipline, honesty, integrity, loyalty and patriotism. The discipline gained in playing games is valuable. Games cannot only bring a good name to the country but also some foreign exchange. As it is wisely said,

“Games and sports widen the mental horizon of players

and make them true followers of the rule of law”.

Sports and games improve our capability (ability). They improve our efficiency. Either study or work alone makes us exhaust. We remain no longer efficient to do any work. Sports remove our mental exhaustion. Sports are integral part of education. Education without sports is incomplete. Keeping their value in life, children are taught some sorts of games in the very early stage in school. These days, sports are a part of academic curricular.

“Some people think, playing game is a matter of life and death.

I don’t like that attitude.

I can assure them, it is much more serious than that”.

A good variety of games must be introduced, besides football, hockey and cricket. Some very common and popular country games prevalent in the locality may be there in the school. Simple athletics like high jump, long jump, disk throw, putting the shot, and hurdles race which do not require much space as playground should be practiced. As someone has rightly said,

“We can’t win at home and on the road.

My problem as a child is that I can’t think of another place to play”.
