Tolerance
Tolerance
means to bear pain or hardships with patience. It also means to bear things you
do not like, For example, when you are in a position to take revenge, but you
do not do so, you are displaying tolerance. As it is rightly said,
“In the practice
of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher.”
Tolerance
is the virtue of a civilized age. It is the virtue that helps us to put up with
those, who have different ways and opinions, and outlook on life. It enables us
to see always the other side of things, to suffer fools with patience, fanatics
without losing out temper.
Tolerance
is a fundamental virtue that plays a crucial role in creating harmony and
understanding in a diverse world. It is the ability to accept and respect
differences in beliefs, opinions, cultures, and backgrounds without prejudice. As
some-one has wisely said,
“Tolerance isn't about not having
beliefs.
It's about how your beliefs lead you
to treat people
who disagree with you.”
Tolerance
is not only an abstract virtue; it is of considerable influence in the current
affairs of life. Man is a social being and has to live in a spirit of harmony
and co-operation with others. In this process, some amount of give-and-take is
necessary, a capacity for compromise. As it is rightly said,
One may tolerate a world of demons
for the sake of an angel.”
In fact,
with the passage of time, we are becoming more ready to recognize the rights of
others than our own. We cannot persuade others unless we ourselves are at the
same time ready to be persuaded by practicing sweet deeds. It is impossible for
one to be tolerant if one is hide-bound and rigid in views or full of
prejudices. We look upon tolerance as a mark of education and superior culture
of ethics of the polite society. As
“The highest result of education is tolerance”
The
greatest tolerance was practised by our Rasool (ﷺ). The Rasool (ﷺ) is a model of tolerance. He (ﷺ) never wished ill for anyone. Hazrat
Ayesha (A) said that the Rasool (ﷺ) never took revenge upon anyone. Abu
Sufyan was the worst enemy of Islam before he became a Muslim. At the conquest
of Makkah, the Rasool (ﷺ) not only forgave him but also honoured him by declaring
amnesty for those who took refuge in his house.
As some-one has wisely said,
“Men build too many walls and not
enough bridges.”
When the Rasool (ﷺ) went to Taif to preach Islam, the people
there threw stones at him. (Hazrat Jibrael (AS) asked Rasool (ﷺ) on the occasion of trial, "O, Muhammad
(ﷺ) speak, if you so wish, I will destroy
them." The Rasool (ﷺ) replied, "O Gracious and Merciful Allah, show them the
right path, for they do not know what they are doing. They do not recognize me.
They do not know I am Muhammad (ﷺ) the Rasool of Allah. Make it known to
them that I am their great well-wisher. As some-one has wisely said,
“Tolerance is the real test of civilization.”
“We
should follow the teachings of our Rasool (ﷺ). We learn from his life, how much tolerance
the Rasool (ﷺ) practiced.”
The Rasool (ﷺ) showed
great tolerance throughout his life. He even prayed for his enemies and for
those who troubled him (ﷺ). In his last address, the Rasool (ﷺ) said, “Revenge for bloodshed, as was the
custom in the days of ignorance before Islam, is forbidden. I forgive those who
murdered my cousin,
“Ibne-Rabiah.” Hazrat Ans Bin
Malik (RA) said, "I served the Rasool (ﷺ) of Allah for 10 years. By Allah, he (ﷺ) never objected to anything, I said or
did.” As it is rightly said,
“The biggest essence of tolerance is forgiveness.”
We, as Muslims should follow
the noble example of the tolerance of our Rasool (ﷺ). The conflict and deterioration
prevailing in the society is due to lack of tolerance. This menace can only be
cured by following the noble examples set by our beloved Rasool Hazrat Muhammad
(ﷺ). As some-one has wisely said,
“Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) is symbol and model of tolerance.”
