Ans. Pasteur was born at Dole, in the Jura district of
France in 1822. At Arbois, he attended Communal College where at first he did
not show any interest in studies but later grasped his mistake and set himself
in earnest at school. His family shifted to Besancon, from where he graduated
and was given a post of College Staff.

Ans. Pasteur was a great patriot because. 1. He donated all his worldly wealth-150
Francs to the welfare of France. 2.
In 1870, when France was on the verge of war with Germany, he joined national
guard but was refused to his physical incapacity. 3.
He returned the diploma of doctorate to the University of Bonn. 4. When he was refused on the score of
physical incapacity by the army, he turned to the sword of science and beat
Germany in the field of Brewing.

Ans. Spontaneous generation means the production of
living things from non-living. Pasteur proved it a wrong concept. He claimed
that if a substance is sufficiently heated no bacteria would produce in it.

Ans. In 1860, the French Academy offered a prize for the
solution of the problem of spontaneous generation. Pasteur proved that if a substance is
sufficiently heated to destroy all life, then bacteria do not develop in it.
Pasteur did his experiment successfully and won the prize.

Ans. In 1849 the silkworms were attacked by disease.
Silkworms-keeping was the major industry of Southern France. Thousands of
families were faced with ruin. In 1865 the government asked Pasteur to investigate
the disease. Pasteur suggested the silk growers rearing the only eggs derived
from healthy moths. He directed the silkworm growers to avoid overcrowding,
un-cleanliness, overheating and unhealthy conditions.

Ans. In 1879, Pasteur was working at fowl-cholera. When

inoculated these dying germs to birds. They fell ill but soon recovered. The
idea occurred to him that weakened germs could cure. This was the discovery of
vaccine.

Pasteur inoculated the boy with attenuated germs for ten days. Pasteur cured
the first patient of hydrophobia by inoculating him for ten days.

methods of cure for other disease, and in ten years between 1881 and 1890 they
discovered the germs of consumption, diphtheria, typhoid, lockjaw, cholera and
Malta fever. It is impossible even to catalogue the list of the medical discoveries
which have sprung from Pasteur's work.
