Overcoat

English Paragraph

One evening in January a well-groomed young man having walked up Davis Road to the Mall turned to Charing Cross. His hairwas sleck and shining and he wore side burns. His thin moustache seemed to have been drawn with a pencil. He had put on a brown overcoat with a cream coloured half opened rose in his button hole and a green flat hat which he wore at a rakish angle. A white silk scarf was knotted at his neck. One of his hands was slipped into a pocket of his overcoat while in the other he held a short polished cane which every now and then he twirled jauntily.

جنوری کی ایک شام کو ایک خوش پوش نو جوان ڈیوس روڈ سے گزرکر مال روڈ پر پہنچا اور چیئرنگ کر اس کی طرف مڑا ۔ اس کے بال نرم و ملائم اور چمکدار تھے اور اس نے قلمیں رکھی ہوئی تھیں ۔ اس کی بار یک مونچھیں تو ایسا لگتا تھا،  جیسے پنسل سے کھینچی گئی تھیں ۔ اس نے ایک نسواری رنگ کا  اوورکوٹ پہنا ہوا  تھا۔  جس کے کاج میں ایک  ادھ کھلا زردی مائل سفید گلاب لگا تھا  اور اس نے ایک خاص ترچھے انداز سے سبز رنگ کا ہیٹ پہن رکھا تھا۔ ایک سفید ریشمی گلو بند اس کی گردن کے گرد بندھا ہوا تھا ۔ اس کا ایک ہاتھ اس کے اوورکوٹ کی جیب میں تھا ۔ جبکہ دوسرے ہاتھ سے اس نے بید کی ایک چھوٹی سی  چمکدار چٹری پکڑی ہوئی تھی۔  جسے وہ وقتا فوقتا مزے سے گھماتا تھا۔

English Paragraph

It was a Saturday evening in mid-winter. The sharp icy gusts of wind struck like steel, but the young man seemed to be immune to them. So, while others were walking briskly to keep warm, he was ambling along obviously enjoying his promenade in the bitter cold. He looked such a dandy that tonga-wallas on catching sight of him, even from a distance, whipped up their horses and raced towards him. With a wave of his stick he turned them away. A taxi also drew near him and the driver looked at him enquiringly. He too was turned off. This time with a "No, thank you.

Urdu Translation

یہ بھر پورسردیوں میں ہفتے کی شام تھی ۔کا ٹتی ہوئی بر فیلی ہوا کے جھکڑ فولا د کی طرح  ٹکراتے تھے۔  مگر وہ نوجوان ان سے محفوظ لگتا تھا ۔ سو دوسرے لوگ جبکہ اپنے آپ کو گرم رکھنے کیلئے تیز تیز چل رہے تھے۔  وہ شد ید ٹھنڈ میں دُلکی چال چلتے ہوئے،  اپنے تفریحی گشت سے لطف اندوز ہور ہا تھا ۔ وہ اتنا خوش پوش دکھائی دیتا تھا کہ ٹانگے والے دور سے ہی اسے دیکھ کر اپنے گھوڑوں کو چا بک لگاتے اور سر پٹ اس کی طرف دوڑاتے ۔ اپنی چھڑی کے ایک اشارے سے وہ  انہیں منع کر دیتا۔ ایک ٹیکسی بھی اس کے قریب آئی اور  ڈرائیور نے سوالیہ انداز سے اس کی طرف  دیکھا۔ اسے بھی انکار کردیا گیا ۔ اس مرتبہ "نہیں شکر یہ" کہہ کر ۔

English Paragraph

As the evening advanced the cold became more intense. It was a cold that induced people to seek comfort in pleasure. At such times, it was not only the profligate who ranged abroad, but even those who were usually content to live with their loneliness, emerged from their hide-outs to join the gaiety of the streets. And so people converged on the Mall where they amused themselves among the variety of hotels, restaurants, cafes and snack bars, cach according to his means. Those who could not afford the pleasures inside, were content to gaze at the coloured lights and brilliant advertisements outside Up and down the main road there was an unending stream of cars, buses, tongas .and bicycles while the pavement thronged with pedestrians

جُوں جُوں شام گہری ہوئی،  سردی بہت زیاد ہ شدید ہوگئی ۔ یہ سردی تھی، جس نے لوگوں کو تفریح  میں آرام  ڈھونڈ نے کی طرف راغب کیا تھا ۔ ایسے اوقات میں، صرف عیاش لوگ ہی نہیں تھے،  جو باہر گھومتے پھرتے بلکہ وہ بھی تھے،   جو بالعموم اپنی تنہائی کے ساتھ رہنے پر اکتفا کرتے،   اپنی پناہ گاہوں سے باہر نمودار ہو گئے تھے۔ تا کہ گلیوں میں  بر پا جشن میں شامل ہو جائیں ۔  اور اس لئے،  لوگ مختلف سمتوں سے مال پر اکٹھے ہو گئے تھے۔  جہاں دومختلف اقسام کے ہوٹلوں ، ریستورانوں ، کیفے اور سنیک باروں میں لطف اندوز ہو رہے تھے ۔  ہر کوئی اپنے وسائل کے مطابق دل بہلا رہا تھا۔ وہ لوگ جو ان جگہوں کے اندر لطف اندوز ہونے کے متحمل نہیں تھے۔  باہر سے ہی رنگ برنگی روشنیوں اور چمکدار  اشتہارات کی طرف ٹکٹکی باندھ کر دیکھنے پر اکتفا کررہے تھے ۔ بڑی سڑک کے دونوں اطراف کاروں ، بسوں ، ٹانگوں اور سائیکلوں کا نہ ختم ہونے والا  ریلا  تھا۔  جبکہ پٹڑی پیدل چلنے والوں سے بھری ہوئی تھی ۔

English Paragraph

The young man seated on the cement bench was watching with interest the people passing on the pavement before him. Most of them were wearing overcoats which were of every kind from the astrakhan to the rough military khaki such as are found in large bundles at the secondhand clothes' shops. The overcoat the young man himself was wearing was old, but it was well cut and the material was of good quality. The lapels were stiff and the sleeves well creased. The buttons were of horn, big and shiny. The young man seemed to be very happy in it.

نو جوان شخص سیمنٹ کے بینچ پر بیٹھا دلچسپی سے اپنے سامنےپٹڑی پر گزرتے ہوئے لوگوں کو دیکھ رہاتھا۔ ان میں سے زیادہ تر نے  اوورکوٹ پہنے ہوئے تھے۔  جن میں ہر قسم کے استرا خانی سے لے کر پرانے خا کی فو جی کوٹ شامل تھے۔  جو پرانے کپڑوں کی دکانوں پر بڑے بنڈلوں کی شکل میں دستیاب ہو تے تھے ۔  جو او ورکوٹ اس نو جوان نے خود پہنا  ہوا تھا۔  پرانا تھا،  مگر یہ اچھی تراش خراش کا تھا  اور ا سکا  کپڑا  اور  دیگر سامان  بہترین تھا۔ کوٹ کا سامنے کا  کالر تنا  ہوا  تھا اور آستینوں کی تہہ بہت اچھی طرح لگی ہوئی تھی ۔ بٹن سینگ کے تھے،  بڑے بڑے اور چمکدار ۔ نو جوان اس میں بہت مسرور  دکھائی دیتا  تھا ۔

English Paragraph

"Pan Walla," a boy selling pan and cigarettes with a tray of his wares passed by. Yes, sir". “Have you change for a ten rupee note? No, sir, but I'll get it for you."

"And what if you don't come back?"

"If you don't trust me sir, you can come with me. Anyway, what do you want to buy? Here, I have found one anna. Now give me a good cigarette and be "Never mind off with you". As he smoked he seemed to relish every puff. A small lean white cat shivering with cold rubbed against his legs and mewed. He stroked it and it leapt up onto the bench. Smoothing its fur he muttered. “Poor little mite.”

Urdu Translation

ایک لڑکا  جو پان اور سگریٹ پیچ رہا تھا، اپنے سامان کی طشتری لئے قریب سے گزرا۔ ’’ پان والا ‘‘’’ جی جناب‘‘  ” کیا آپ کے پاس دس روپے کی ریزگاری ہے؟ ’’نہیں جناب ، مگر میں آپ کو لا دوں گا۔‘‘ ’’اوراگرتم واپس نہ آئے تو ؟ اگر آپ کو مجھ پر اعتبار نہیں تو آپ میرے ساتھ آ سکتے ہیں۔  خیر آپ خریدنا کیا چاہتے ہیں؟‘‘ کوئی بات نہیں ۔۔۔ مجھے ایک  "آنی "  مل گئی ہے۔  اب مجھے ایک اچھا سا سگریٹ دے دو اور بھاگ جاؤ۔“ جب وہ سگریٹ پیتا تو ایسا لگتا تھا کہ ہرکش کا لطف اٹھاتا ہو ۔ ایک چھوٹی  دبکی سفید بلی سردی سے کانپتی ہوئی،  اس کی ٹانگوں سے رگڑ نے  اور میاؤں میاؤں کرنے لگی ۔ اس نے اسے تھپتھپایا  تو وہ چھلانگ لگا کر بینچ پر چڑھی۔  اس کی کھال کو سنوارتے ہوئے وہ بڑ بڑایا۔ بے چاری ننھی سی جان۔ ‘‘

English Paragraph

After a few minutes he got up. By now it was past seven. He started offagain along the Mall. An orchestra could be heard playing in one of the restaurants. Many people had collected outside. Mostly, they were passers by, a few drivers of the waiting taxis and tongas, labourers and beggars. Some fruit vendors having sold their fruit were also standing around with their empty baskets. These people outside seemed to be enjoying the music more than those who sat inside, for they were listening in silence though the music was foreign.

چند منٹ بعد،  وہ اٹھ کھڑا  ہوا ۔ اب تک کوئی سات سے اوپر کا وقت تھا۔  اس نے دوبارہ  مال روڈ  پر چلنا شروع کر دیا۔ ریستورانوں میں سے،  ایک میں ساز بجتا سنا جاسکتا تھا۔ باہر بہت سے لوگ اکٹھے ہو چکے تھے۔ ان میں زیادہ تر راہ گیر ،  کچھ سواریوں کے منتظر ٹیکسیوں اور ٹانگوں کے ڈرائیورز ، مز دور اور فقیر تھے۔ کچھ پھل فروش بھی اپنا پھل بیچنے کے بعد اپنی خالی ٹو کریوں قریب کھڑے تھے۔ باہر کھڑے ہوئے  یہ افراد،  اندر  بیٹھے ہوئے  لوگوں کی نسبت موسیقی سے زیادہ لطف اندوز ہوتے دکھائی دیتے تھے ۔ کیونکہ وہ خاموشی سے سن رہے تھے۔ اگر چہ موسیقی غیر ملکی تھی ۔

English Paragraph

The young man also stood and listened for a moment or so, then walked on. A few minutes later, he found himself outside a large Western music shop. Without hesitation he went in. There were musical instruments of different kinds arranged on shelves around the walls. On a long table, attractively displayed, were the latest hit songs. A Spanish guitar was hanging on the wall. He examined it with the air of a connoisseur and studied the price label attached to it. Then, a huge German Piano diverted his attention. Lifting the cover of the key-board, he played a few notes and closed it again.

نو جوان بھی کچھ دیر کے لئے وہاں رکا اور سننے لگا اور پھر چل پڑا۔ چند منٹ بعد،  اس نے اپنے آپ کو مغربی موسیقی کی ایک بڑی دکان کے باہر پایا۔ بغیر ہچکچاہٹ کے،  وہ اندر چلا گیا ۔ وہاں مختلف قسم کے موسیقی کے آلات دیوار کے ساتھ خانوں میں رکھے گئے تھے۔ ایک لمبی میز پر بالکل نئے اور مشہور ترین گانوں کی دلکش انداز سے نمائش کی گئی تھی ۔ ایک سپین کا بنا ہوا گٹار  دیوار کے ساتھ لٹک رہا تھا۔ اس نے ماہرانہ انداز میں،  اسکا معائنہ کیا اور قیمت والی پر چی کو پڑھا،  جو اس کے ساتھ لگی تھے۔ پھر ایک بہت بڑے جرمن پیانو نے اس کی توجہ اپنی طرف مبذول کروا لی۔ پیانو کی کنجیوں کی تختی کا  ڈھکن اٹھاتے ہوئے،  اس نے چندسُر بجائے  اور  دوبارہ  اسے بند کر دیا ۔

English Paragraph

One of the salesmen came up. "Good evening, sir," he said,"Can I help you, sir?"

“No thank you," the young man said with an air of indifference. Then suddenly as if remembering something he called out. "Oh yes Could you let me have a list ofthis month's gramophone records?" He slipped the list into one ofthe pockets ofhis overcoat and resumed his promenade on the Mall.

He stopped next at a book stall. He picked up one or two magazines and after hurried glance at the contents carefully replaced them. A few yards further on, a large Persiar carpet, which was hanging outside a shop, attracted his attention. The owner of the shop wearing a long robe and a silk turban greeted him warmly.

دکان کے ملازموں میں سے ایک قریب آ گیا۔’’ شام بخیر جناب‘‘ اس نے کہا : کیا میں آپ کی کچھ مددکر سکتا ہوں ، ‘‘جناب ’’نہیں شکر یہ آپ کا ‘‘ نو جوان نے لاتعلقی کے انداز سے کہا ۔ پھر اچا  نک، جیسے کچھ یاد کرتے ہوئے وہ پکارا۔ ’’اوہ  ہاں ۔۔۔ کیا آپ مجھے اس ماہ کے گراموفون کے ریکارڈ ز کی فہرست فراہم کر سکتے ہیں ۔ اس نے وہ فہرست اپنے اوورکوٹ کی ایک جیب میں ڈال دی اور مال پر اپنی ہوا خوری جاری رکھی ۔ اس کے بعد،  وہ ایک کتابوں کی دکان پر رکا۔  اس نے ایک یا  دومیگزین اٹھائے اور ان کے مضامین پر تیزی سے ایک نظر ڈالنے کے بعد احتیاط سے انہیں و ہیں رکھ دیا۔ چند گز مزید آگے ایک بڑے ایرانی قالین نے جو ایک دکان کے باہر لٹک رہا تھا۔   اس کی توجہ حاصل کر لی ۔ دکان کے مالک نے جو ایک بڑا چغہ اور ریشمی پگڑی پہنے ہوئے تھا ۔ اسکا بڑی گرمجوشی سے استقبال کیا ۔

English Paragraph

“I just wanted to see this carpet, the young man said to the carpet dealer. "With pleasure, sir". "Oh, don't bother to take it down. I can see it quite well as it is. How much is it?"

"Fourteen hundred and thirty-two rupees, sir." The young man frowned as if to suggest, "Oh so much." "You have only to select, sir," said the carpet dealer amiably, "and we will reduce the price to the minimum."

"Thank you so much," the young man said approvingly. "A fine carpet indeed, I'll come again some time," and he walked away. The cream colour rose which adorned the lapel of his overcoat had slipped and was about to fall. He adjusted it with a peculiar smile of satisfaction.

Urdu Translation

میں اس قالین کو صرف دیکھنا چاہتا تھا‘‘ نو جوان نے قالین فروش سے کہا۔ ’’ بہت خوشی سے ، جناب ۔  نیچے اتارنے کی زحمت مت کر یں ۔ میں اسی طرح،  اس کو اچھی طرح دیکھ سکتا ہوں ۔ کتنے کا ہے یہ؟‘‘ چودہ سو بتیس روپے، جناب ۔ نوجوان نے ایسے تیوری چڑھائی،  جیسے کہ” اوہ ،اسے رائے دینا چاہتا ہو ’’اوہ بہت زیادہ ہیں ۔ آپ کو صرف انتخاب کرنا پڑے گا ، جناب ‘‘ قالین فروش نے دوستانہ اندازسے کہا  اور ہم قیمت میں کم از کم حد تک رعایت کر دیں گے ۔‘‘ آپ کا بہت بہت شکریہ،  نو جوان نے پسندیدگی سے کہا۔ واقعی  یہ ایک عمدہ  قالین ہے۔ میں پھر کسی وقت دوبارہ آؤں گا ‘‘ اور پرے چلا گیا۔ زردی مائل سفید گلاب،  جس نے اس کے اوورکوٹ کے کالر کو سجایا ہوا تھا۔  وہ پھسل چکا تھا  اور تقریبا کرنے والا تھا۔  اس نے اطمینان بھری انوکھی مسکراہٹ سے اسے سنوارا۔

English Paragraph

He was now walking along the pavement near the High Courts. He had been roaming about for quite a long time, but his spirits were still high; he was neither tired nor bored. At this part of the Mall, the crowd of pedestrians had thinned down and there were quite long stretches of empty pavement between one group and the other. The young man as he went along tried to spin his cane around one finger, but in this attempt, he dropped it.  "Oh, sorry," he exclaimed and bending down picked it up.

Urdu Translation

اب وہ ہائی کورٹ کے قریب پٹڑی پر چل رہا تھا۔  وہ کافی دیر سے گھوم پھر رہا تھا،  لیکن اس کا حوصلہ اب بھی بلند تھا۔ نہ تو وہ تھکا تھا اور نہ ہی بے مزا  ہوا تھا ۔ مال کے،  اس حصے پر پیدل چلنے والوں کے ہجوم میں کمی ہوگئی تھی اور لوگوں کے ایک جھرمٹ اور دوسرے جھرمٹ کے درمیان خالی پٹڑی کے کافی طویل تھے۔ نو جوان نے چلتے چلتے بید کی چھٹری کو ایک انگلی سے گھمانے کی کوشش کی، مگر اس کوشش میں، اس نے اسے گرا دیا۔اوہ معاف کیجئے گا۔ وہ پکاراٹھا اور جھکتے ہوئے اسے اٹھا لیا۔

English Paragraph

Meanwhile, young couple who had been walking behind him passed by and went a head of him. The youth was tall and was wearing black corduroy trousers and a leather jacket with a zip. The girl wore a floppy shalwar of white satin and a green coat. She was short and bulky. The young man was delighted to watch this spectacle and kept on walking behind them.

So far the young man had found little to interest him among the persons, he had observed that evening. He had been, perhaps, too deeply engrossed in himself. He followed them closely hoping to get a glimpse of their faces and to hear more of their talk.

اسی دوران، ایک نو جوان جوڑا جو اس کے پیچھے پیچھے چل رہا تھا۔ اس کے قریب سے گزرا اور اس سے آگے نکل گیا۔ لڑکا طو یل قامت  تھا اور سیاہ  کاڈرائے کی پتلون  پہنی تھی اور زپ والی چمڑے کی جیکٹ پہنی تھی۔ لڑکی نے ایک ڈھیلی اھالی سفید سائن کی شلوار اور ہرے رنگ کا کوٹ پہنا تھا۔ وہ چھوٹے قد کی اور بھاری بھر کم تھی۔

نو جوان یہ منظر دیکھ کر خوش ہوا  اور ان کے پیچھے چلتا رہا۔ اس شام اب تک نو جوان نے جتنے لوگوں کا بھی مشاہدہ کیا تھا۔ اسے ان میں سے اب اپنی دلچسپی کی کوئی چیز ملی تھی ۔ د و غالبا اپنی ہی سوچوں میں گم رہا تھا۔ وہ ان کے پیچھے کافی قریب چلتا رہا۔ اس امید پر کہ ان کے چہروں کی ایک جھلک دیکھ لے اور ان کی مزید گفتگوسن لے ۔

English Paragraph

By now they had reached the big cross-roads near the General Post Office. The pair stopped for a moment, then after crossing the Mall headed toward McLeod Road.

When the couple had walked some hundred yards ahead of him, he hurriedly moved after them. Hardly had he reached half way across the road when a truck full of bricks came from behind like a gust of wind and crushing him down speeded off towards McLeod Road.

The driver of the truck had heard a shriek and had actually for a moment slowed down, but realizing that something serious had happened, had taken advantage of the darkness and had sped away into the night. Two or three passers-by who had witnessed the accident shouted. "Stop him take the number." But the truck was no more to be seen.

اب تک وہ جی ۔ پی ۔او کے قریب بڑے چوراہے پر پہنچ چکے تھے ۔ جوڑا ایک لمحے کے لئے رکا ، پھر مال کو عبور کرنے کے بعد میکلوڈ  روڈ کی طرف بڑھا۔ جب جوڑا کوئی سوگز اس کے آگے چل چکا تو اس نے تیزی سے ان کے پیچھے چلنا شروع کر دیا۔ ابھی وہ سڑک کے تقریباََ  وسط میں ہی پہنچا تھا۔  جب اینٹوں سے بھرا  ایک ٹرک آندھی کے جھکڑ کی مانند پیچھے سے آیا  اور اسے نیچے کچلتا ہوا  تیزی سے میکلوڈ  روڈ کی طرف چلا گیا۔

ٹرک کے ڈرائیور نےچیچ سن لی تھی اور ایک لمحے کے لئے واقعی رفتار آہستہ کر لی تھی۔مگر یہ جانتے ہوئے کہ کوئی سنگین واقعہ رونما ہو گیا ہے ، تاریکی کا فائدہ اٹھایا اور تیز رفتاری کے ساتھ رات کے اندھیرے میں فرار ہو گیا ۔ دو تین راہ گیر جنہوں نے حادثے کو اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا تھا۔  چلا ئے’’روکو اسے ۔۔۔۔نمبر نوٹ کرلو ‘‘ مگر ٹرک وہاں کہاں تھا،  جو دکھائی دیتا۔

English Paragraph

In a short while quite a large crowd had collected. A traffic inspector on his motor bike stopped. The young man was badly hurt. There was a lot of blood about and he was in a very precarious state. A car was stopped and he was loaded into it and taken to a nearby hospital. When they reached there, he was just alive.

On duty that night in the casualty department were assistant surgeon Khan and two young nurses, Shehnaz and Gull. He was still wearing his brown overcoat and the silk scarf. There were large stains of blood all over his clothes. Someone had, out of sympathy, placed the young man's green felt hat on his chest so that it should not be lost.

کچھ ہی دیر میں کافی ہجوم اکٹھا ہو گیا تھا ۔ ٹریفک پولیس کا ایک انسپکٹر اپنی موٹر بائیک پررک گیا ۔نو جوان بری طرح سے زخمی تھا۔ اردگرد بہت سا خون تھا اور وہ بہت نازک حالت میں تھا ۔ ایک کا رکو روکا گیا اور اسے اس میں لا دا گیا اور قریبی ہسپتال لے جایا گیا ۔  جب وہ وہاں پہنچے تو وہ صرف برائے نام ہی زند ہ تھا ۔ اس رات شعبہ حادثات میں اسٹنٹ سرجن ڈاکٹر خان اور دو نو جوان نرسیں شہناز اورگل ڈیوٹی  پرتھیں ۔ اس نے ابھی تک اپنا بھورا  اوورکوٹ اور ریشمی سکارف پہنا ہوا تھا ۔ اس کے تمام کپڑوں پر بڑے بڑے خون کے دھبے تھے ۔ کسی نے از راہ  ہمدردی نو جوان کا سبز  ہیٹ اس کے سینے پر رکھ دیا تھا تا کہ وہ گم نہ ہو جائے ۔

English Paragraph

"Seems quite well-to-do." Nurse Shehnaz said to Nurse Gill, to which she replied in a lower tone: scarf. "All togged up for Saturday night, poor chap."

"Did they catch the driver?" "No he got away." "What a pity!"

In the operating theatre the assistant surgeon and the two nurses with their faces concealed behind masks, were attending the young man, only their eyes were visible. He was lying on a white marble table. His hair was still smooth against his temples. The strong scented oil with which he had dressed it earlier that evening still gave out a faint odour. His clothes were now being taken off. The first to be removed was the white silk scarf.

کسی کھاتے پیتے گھر کا لگتا ہے ‘‘ نرس شہناز نے نرس گل سے کہا،  جس کے جواب میں،  وہ بڑی مدہم آواز میں کہنے لگی۔ خوب بن ٹھن کےنکلا  تھا،  ہفتے کی رات منانے کے لئے بے چارہ ۔‘‘ ’’ کیا انہوں نے ڈرائیورکو پکڑ لیا؟‘‘ نہیں وہ فرار ہو گیا ۔‘‘ کتنے افسوس کی بات ہے!‘‘ آپریشن تھیٹر میں اسٹنٹ سرجن اور دونوں نرسیں جن کے چہرے نقابوں کے پیچھے چھپے ہوئے تھے جبکہ صرف ان کی آنکھیں دکھائی دیتی تھیں۔  اس نوجوان کی دیکھ بھال میں مصروف تھے۔

وہ سنگ مرمر کی میز پر لیٹا  ہوا  تھا۔  اس کے بال ابھی بھی اس کی کنپٹیوں کے ساتھ ہموار تھے ۔ تیز خوشبو دار تیل جو اس نے اس شام کو ان میں لگایا تھا۔  ابھی بھی ہلکی سی مہک دے رہا تھا ۔ اب اس کے کپڑے اتارے جارہے تھے ۔ سب سے پہلے اتارا  جانے والا سفید ریشمی گلو بند تھا ۔

English Paragraph

Beneath the scarf, there was neither a tie nor a collar.... nor even a shirt. When the overcoat was removed it was found that the young man was wearing underneath only an old cotton sweater which was all in holes. Through these holes one could see the dirty vest which was in an even worse state than the sweater. Layers of dirt covered his body. He could not have had a bath for at least two months. Only the upper part of his neck was clean and well powdered.

سکارف کے نیچے نہ تو ٹالی تھی اور نہ ہی کالر ۔ ۔ ۔ سرے سے قمیض ہی نہیں تھی ۔ جب  اوورکوٹ اتارا گیا  تو پتا چلا کہ نوجوان نے نیچے صرف ایک پرانا سوتی سویٹر پہن رکھا تھا،  جو سوراخوں سے بھرا  ہوا  تھا۔ ان سوراخوں میں سے کوئی بھی وہ گندی بنیان دیکھ سکتا تھا،  جو سویٹر سے بھی زیادہ بدتر حالت میں تھی ۔ اس کے جسم پر میل کی تہیں چڑھی ہوئی تھیں۔ کم از کم  وہ  دو  ماہ  سے نہایا نہیں تھا۔ صرف گردن کا  اوپر  والا حصہ صاف تھا اور اچھی طرح پاؤڈر  لگا  ہوا تھا۔

English Paragraph

The shoes and the socks now came off. The shoes were old but brightly polished. As to the socks, in colour and pattern the one was quite different from the other. There were holes at the heels, and where the flesh showed through the holes it was grimed with dirt. He was by now dead and his life-less body lay on the white marble slab. The following were the few things which were found in the various pockets of his overcoat.

Urdu Translation

اب جوتے اور جرابیں اتری گئیں ۔ جوتے پرانے تھے، مگر اچھی طرح چمکائے گئے تھے ۔ جہاں تک جرابوں کا تعلق تھا  تو  رنگ  اور نمونے دونوں کے لحاظ سے ایک دوسرے سے بالکل مختلف تھی ۔ ایڑیوں پرسوراخ تھے اور جہاں جہاں سوراخوں سے گوشت دکھائی دیتا تھا،  یہ مٹی سے آلودہ  ہوچکا تھا ۔وہ اب تک مر چکا تھا اور اس کا بے جاں جسم سنگ مرمر کی سِل پر پڑا  تھا۔  اس کے اوورکوٹ کی مختلف جیبوں سے جو اشیاء بر آمد ہوئیں وہ مندرجہ ذیل تھیں۔

English Paragraph

A small black comb, a handkerchief, six annas and a few pies, a half smoked cigarette, a little diary in which the names and addresses of a few people were noted, a list of gramophone records and a few handbills which distributors had thrust upon him during his evening promenade. Alas, his little cane, which was perhaps lost at the time of the accident, was not included in the list.

Urdu Translation

ایک چھوٹی سیا ہ کنگھی ، ایک رو مال ، چھ آنے  اور چند پیسے ، ایک بجھا  ہوا  آدھا سگریٹ ، ایک چھوٹی سی ڈائری،  جس میں کچھ لوگوں کے نام  اور  پتے  درج تھے۔ گراموفون ریکارڈوں کی ایک فہرست اور چند اشتہار ، جو اشتہار  بانٹنے والوں نے شام کی چہل قدمی کے دوران میں اسے تھما دیئے تھے ۔ افسوس کہ اس کی چھوٹی بید کی چھٹری جو کہ شاید حادثے کے وقت کہیں کھو گئی تھی۔ فہرست میں شامل نہیں تھی ۔
