I Have a Dream

English Paragraph

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from the areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream.

Urdu Translation

میں اس بات سے غافل نہیں ہوں کہ آپ میں سے کچھ یہاں بڑی آزمائشوں اور سخت مصیبتوں میں سے گزرکر آئے ہیں ۔ آپ میں سے کچھ تازہ تازہ جیل کی تنگ کوٹھڑیوں سے نکل کر آئے ہیں ۔ آپ میں سے کچھ ایسے علاقوں سے یہاں آئے ہیں۔  جہاں آزادی کے لئے آپ کی جستجو نے آپ کو ظلم وستم کے طوفانوں سے بے حال اور پولیس کی بر بریت میں لڑ کھڑا دیا ہے۔ ۔ آپ تخلیقی عمل کی تکالیف کے تجربہ کار ہو ۔ اس اعتماد سے کام جاری رکھیں کہ بلا  جواز مصیبت نجات دلانے والی ہوتی ہے۔ 

واپس مسی سی پی جاؤ ،  واپس ایلا  با ما  جاؤ ،  واپس ساؤ تھ کیرولینا  جاؤ ،  واپس جار جیاجاؤ،  واپس لوز یا نا  جاؤ،  واپس ہمارے شمالی شہروں کی پسماندہ بستیوں اور اقلیتی محلوں میں جاؤ،  یہ جانتے ہوئے کہ کسی نہ کسی طرح ، یہ صورت حال تبدیل کی جاسکتی ہے اور کی جائے گی ۔ ہمیں مایوسی کی وادی میں نہیں بھٹکنا چاہئے ۔ میں آج آپ سے یہ کہتا ہوں ۔ میرے دوستو کہ اس دور کی مشکلات اور مایوسیوں کے باوجود،  میرا اب بھی ایک خواب ہے ۔

English Paragraph

It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

Urdu Translation

یہ ایک ایسا خواب ہے،  جو امریکی خواب کی جڑوں تک پو ست ہے ۔ میرا  ایک خواب ہے کہ ایک دن یہ قوم عروج حاصل کرے گی اور اپنے عقیدے کے اصل معنی کو پو را کرے گی ۔ اہم ان سچائیوں کو از خود واضح سمجھتے ہیں کہ تمام انسانوں کو برا برتخلیق کیا گیا ہے ۔‘‘ میرا ایک خواب ہے کہ ایک روز جار جیا  کی سرخ  پہاڑیوں پر سابقہ غلاموں کے بیٹے اور سابقہ غلاموں کے مالکوں کے بیٹے،  اس قابل ہوں گے کہ اخوت و بھائی چارے کی میز پر اکٹھے بیٹھ جائیں ۔

میرا ایک خواب ہے کہ ایک دن حتٰی کہ مسی سی پی کی ریاست ، جو کہ نا انصافی اور جبر کی حدت سے تپتی ہوئی صحرائی ریاست ہے ، انصاف اور آزادی کے نخلستان میں تبدیل کر دی جائے گی ۔ میرا ایک خواب ہے کہ میرے چاروں چھوٹے بچے ایک روز ایک ایسی قوم میں زندگی بسر کر یں گے۔  جہاں ان کو ان کی رنگت سے نہیں بلکہ ان کے کردار  کی خوبی سے پرکھا جائے گا ۔

English Paragraph

I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Urdu Translation

آج میرا ایک خواب ہے ۔ میرا ایک خواب ہے کہ ایک دن ایلا باما کی ریاست ، جس کے گورنر کے ہونٹوں سے اس وقت مداخلت اور منسوخی کے الفاظ ٹپک رہے ہیں ۔ ایک ایسی صورت حال میں تبد یل کر دی جائے گی۔  جہاں ننھے سیاہ فام لڑ کے اور سیاہ  فام لڑ کیاں،  ننھے سفید فام لڑکوں اور سفید فام لڑکیوں سے تعاون کر نے اور بہن بھائیوں کی حیثیت سے ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ چلنے کے قابل ہو جا ئیں گے ۔

آج میرا ایک خواب ہے۔ میرا ایک خواب ہےکہ ایک دن ہر وادی کو بلند بنا دیا جائیگا ۔ ہر پہاڑی اور پہاڑ کونیچا کر دیا جائیگا ،  نا ہموار جگہوں کو ہموار بنا دیا جائیگا اور ٹیڑھی جگہوں کو سیدھا کر دیا جائیگا اورخدا  کی شان و شوکت آ شکار کی جائیگی اور تمام جاندار مخلوقات اکٹھے ہو کر اس کا نظارہ کر یں گی۔

English Paragraph

This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. This will be the day when all of us will be able to sing with new meaning.

Urdu Translation

یہ ہماری امید ہے۔ یہ  وہ  یقین اور اعتماد ہے۔ جس کے ساتھ میں جنوب کی جانب لوٹ رہا ہوں ۔ اسی یقین کے ساتھ ہم مایوسی کے پہاڑ میں سے امید کا ایک پتھر تراش کر نکالنے کے قابل ہوں گے۔ اسی یقین کے ساتھ،  ہم اپنی قوم کے بے سُرے پن کو بھائی چارے اور اخوت کی ایک خوبصورت دھن میں تبدیل کرنے کے قابل ہو جائیں گے۔اسی یقین کے ساتھ ، ہم اکٹھے کام کرنے ، عبادت کرنے ، جد و جہد کرنے ، جیل جانے اور آزادی کے لئے اٹھ کھڑے ہونے کے قابل ہو جائیں گے۔ یہ جانتے ہوئے کہ ایک دن ہم آزاد ہوں گے ۔ یہی وہ  دن ہو گا،  جب ہم سب نےک مفہوم کے ساتھ گانے کے قابل ہوں گے۔

English Paragraph

My country, 'tis of thee,

Sweet land of liberty,

Of thee I sing

Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims' pride,

From every mountain side

Let freedom ring.

میرے وطن ، یہ تمہاری ہے ، آزادی کی میٹد  سرزمین ، جس کے لئے میں گا تاہوں۔  سرز مین جہاں میرے آبا و اجداد نے وفات پائی ، سرزمین جوزائرین کے لئے باعث فخر ہے، ہر پہاڑ کی جانب سےآزادی کی جھکایر گونجنے دو ۔

English Paragraph

 (Note: It's a song in praise of one's country. My country is a sweet land of liberty. I sing for this land where my fathers died. It is a land of the pilgrims pride and let the freedom ring from every side of it.

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!

But not only that, let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and Molehill of Mississippi. From every mountain side, let freedom ring.

Urdu Translation

نوٹ: یہ اپنے وطن کی تعریف میں نغمہ ہے ۔ میرا ملک آزادی کی ایک               میٹھی سرزمین ہے ۔ میں اس سرزمین کے لئے گا تا ہوں۔  جہاں میرے

بزرگوں نے وفات پائی ۔ یہ ایک ایسی سرزمین ہے ۔ جو زائرین کے لئے              باعث فخر ہے اور میری دعا ہے کہ اس کے ہر کونے سے آزادی کی جھنکار

گونجے۔اور  اگر  امریکہ کو ایک عظیم قوم  بنا  ہے تو اس خواب کو حقیقت بننا چاہیے ۔               اس لئے،  نیو ہمپشائر کی عظیم پہاڑی چوٹیوں سے آزادی کوگو نجنے دو۔

آزادی کو نیو یارک کے عظیم الجثہ پہاڑوں سے گونجنے دو ۔                                                  آزادی کو پینسلوینیا کے بلند  و  بالا  پہاڑی سلسلے سے گونجنے دو!

آزادی کو کولوراڈو  کی برف پوش چوٹیوں سے گونجنے دو!                                                    آزادی کو کیلی فورنیا کی دلکش  ابھار  والی  چوٹیوں سے گونجنے دو !

مگر نہ صرف  یہ کہ آزادی کو جارجیا کے سٹون ماؤنٹین سے گونجنے دو ۔                                 آزادی کو ٹینی سی کے لک آؤٹ  ماؤنٹین سے گونجنے دو !

آزادی کومسی سی پی کی ہر پہاڑی اور مٹی کے تودے سے گونجنے دو۔                                    ہر پہاڑی علاقے سے آزادی کو گونجنے دو ۔

English Paragraph

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of us, black men and white men, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual,

"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God, we are free at last!"

Note: 1. Rockies of Colorado, peaks of California, Stone Mountain of Georgia, Mountain of Tennessee and Mole-hill of Mississippi are the names of mountains of those states. 2. Negro spiritual is a religious song of a type originally sung by the Negro slaves in America. Words are as above.

جب ہم آزادی کو گونجنے دیں گے ، جب ہم اسے ہر بڑے گاؤں اور ہر چھوٹے گاؤں ، ہر ریاست اور ہر شہر سے گونجنے دیں گے تو ہم اس دن کو جلد از جلد لانے کے قابل ہو جائیں گے۔  جب ہم سب سیاہ فام اورسفید فام آپس میں تعاون کرنے کے قابل ہو جائیں گے اور سیاہ فام لوگوں کا قدیم مذہبی گیت گائیں گے ’’بالآخر آزاد! بالآخر آزاد! شکر ہے خدائے  بزرگ  و  برتر ، ہم  بالآخر آزاد ہیں!‘‘

About the Author

Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was the most charismatic leader of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s until his assassination in 1968. He led sit-ins and demonstrations throughout the South and was the President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference as well as Pastor of a large congregation in Atlanta. This speech, delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial at a centennial celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, moves us as deeply on paper today as it did when it was delivered with Martin Luther King's powerful skills of oratory. It points the way to a world free from the burden of racism.
