A Mild Attack of Locusts

" English Paragraph

Look, look, there they are!"

Out ran Margaret to join them, looking at the hills Out came the servants from the kitchen. They all stood and gazed. Over the rocky levels of the mountain was a streak of rust coloured air, Locusts. There they came. At once, Richard shouted at the cook-boy. Old Stephen yelled at the houseboy. The cook-boy ran to beat the old ploughshare, hanging from a tree branch that was used to summon labourers at moments of crisis. The houseboy ran off to the store to collect tin cans, any old bit of metal. The farm was ringing with the clamour of the gong, and they could see the labourers come pouring out of the compound, pointing at the hills and shouting excitedly. Soon, they had all come up to the house, and Richard and old Stephen were giving them orders-hurry, hurry, hurry.

Urdu Translation

دیکھو دیکھو، وہ  ر ہیں ۔‘‘ مارگریٹ ان  کے ساتھ شامل ہونے کیلئے پہاڑیوں کی طرف دیکھتی ہوئی ،باہر کی طرف بھاگی ۔  ملازمین باورچی خانے سے باہر آ گئے۔ وہ  سب کھڑے ہو کرٹکٹکی باندھ کر دیکھنے لگے۔ پہاڑی کی چٹانی سطحوں کے اوپر فضا میں ایک سرخی مائل بھورے رنگ کی دھاری تھی،  جو ٹڈ یاں تھیں ۔دیکھو وہ آگئی تھیں ۔  ایک دم رچرڈ نے کھانا پکانے والے لڑ کے کو آواز دی۔ بوڑھے سٹیفن نے گھریلو ملازم لڑ کے کی طرف زور دار نعرہ  بلند کیا۔  باور چی لڑ کا  ہل کا پھالا بجانے کے لئے بھا گا،  جو ایک درخت کی شاخ سے لٹک  رہا تھا۔ جو مزدوروں کو بحران کے لمحات میں بلانے کے لئے استعمال کیا جاتا تھا۔ ملازم لڑ کا گودام کی جانب بھا گا تا کہ ٹین کے ڈبے یا دھات کے پرانے ٹکڑے اکٹھے کر سکے۔

English Paragraph

And off they ran again, the two white men with them and in a few minutes Margaret could see the smoke of fires rising from all around the farmlands. Piles of wood and grass had been prepared there. There were seven patches of bared soil, yellow colour and pink, where the new mealies were just showing, making a film of bright green, and around each drifted up thick clouds of smoke. They were throwing wet leaves on to the fires now, to make it acrid and black. Margaret was watching the hills. Now there was a long, low cloud advancing, rust colour still, swelling forward and out as she looked. The telephone was ringing. Neighbours - quick, quick, there come the locusts. Old Smith had had his crop eaten to the ground.

اور  وہ  دوبارہ  واپس  بھاگ  گئے ،  دو سفید  فام  آدمی  ان کے ساتھ تھے  اور  چند ہی منٹ میں  ہی منٹ میں مارگر یٹ زرعی زمینوں کے اردگرد سے آگ کے جلنے سے بلند  ہونے والا دھواں دیکھ سکتی تھی۔ وہاں لکڑی اور گھاس کے ڈھیر استعمال کے لئے تیار کئے گئے تھے۔ خالی زمین کے پیلے اور گلابی رنگ کے سات قطعے تھے،  جہاںمکئی کے نوخیز بھٹے دکھائی دے رہے تھے  اور  چمکدارسبز رنگ کی تہہ  کی طرح لگ رہے تھے اور ہر ایک کے گر دھوئیں کے گہرے بادل بلند تھے ۔ اب وہ آگ پر گیلے پتے پھینک رہے تھے تا کہ اسے سیاہ اور تند و تیز بنا دیں ۔

مارگریٹ پہاڑوں کا مشاہدہ کر رہی تھی ۔ جب اس نے دیکھا تو تب ایک طویل، کم بلند بادل آگے بڑھ رہا تھا۔  جو  ابھی تک سرخی مائل بھورے رنگ کا تھا  اور آگے کی طرف پھیل رہا تھا ۔ فون کی گھنٹی بج رہی تھی ۔ پڑوسیو ۔ جلدی کر و۔ جلدی کرو۔ ٹڈیاں آرہی ہیں ۔ بوڑھے سمتھ کی فصل زمین بوس ہو چکی تھی ۔

English Paragraph

Quick, get your fires started. For of course, while every farmer hoped the locusts would overlook his farm and go on to the next, it was only fair to warn each other, one must play fair Everywhere, fifty miles over the countryside, the smoke was rising from myriads of fires. Margaret answered the telephone calls, and between calls she stood watching the locusts. The air was darkening. A strange darkness, for the sun was blazing-it was like the darkness of a veldt fire, when the air gets thick with smoke. The sunlight comes down distorted, a thick, hot orange. Oppressive it was, too, with the heaviness of a storm. The locusts were coming fast. Now half the sky was darkened. Behind the reddish veils in front, which were the advance guards of the swarm, the main swarm showed in dense black cloud, reaching almost to the sun itself.

جلدی کرو ، اپنی اپنی آگ جلانا شروع کر دو ۔ کیونکہ بلاشبہ ، جبکہ ہر کسان کو یہ امید تھی کہ ٹڈی  دل اس کے کھیت کو نظر انداز کر کے اگلے  کھیت کی طرف چلا جائے گا۔ صرف یہی اچھی بات تھی کہ ایک دوسرے کو خبر دار کر دیا جا ئے ۔ ہر کسی کو منصفانہ رویہ اپنانا چاہیئے ۔ پچاس میل پر محیط  دیہی علاقے پر  ہر جگہ آگ کے بے شمار الا ؤ تھے،  جن میں سے دھواں نکل رہا تھا ۔

مارگریٹ فون کالز کا جواب دیتی اور اس دوران میں کھڑی ہو کر ٹڈی دل کو دیکھنے لگتی ۔ فضا تاریک ہورہی تھی ۔ ایک عجیب وغریب تاریکی تھی،  کیونکہ سورج دہک رہا تھا۔ یہ گھاس کے میدان میں لگنے والی آگ کی تاریکی کی مانند تھی۔  جب فضا  دھوئیں سے بھاری ہو جاتی ہے۔ سورج کی روشنی مسخ شد ہ شکل میں نیچے آتی ہے،  بہت گہری ، تیز  نارنجی  رنگ نا قابل برداشت تھی۔  جبکہ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ ایک طوفان کی شدت بھی تھی۔ ٹڈیاں  بہت تیز رفتاری سے آ رہی تھیں ۔ اب تقریبا  آدھا آسمان تاریک ہو رہا تھا۔ سامنے  کی جانب سرخی مائل پردوں کے پیچھے، جو کہ اس بہت بڑے  غول کا  ہراول دستہ تھا ، اصل غول گہرے سیاہ بادل کی شکل میں تقریبا سورج تک پہنچتا ہوا دکھائی دیتا تھا ۔

English Paragraph

Margaret was wondering what she could do to help. She did not know. Then up came old Stephen from the lands. "We're finished, Margaret, finished! Those beggars can eat every leaf and blade off the farm in half an hour! And it is only early afternoon - if we can make enough smoke, make enough noise till the sun goes down, they'll settle somewhere else perhaps...." And then: "Get the kettle going. It's thirsty work, this." Looking out, all the trees were queer and still, clotted with insects, their boughs weighed to the ground. The earth seemed to be moving, locusts crawling everywhere, she could not see the lands at all, so thick was the swarm. Toward the mountains it was like looking into driving rain-even as she watched, the sun was blotted out with a fresh onrush of them. It was a half-night, a perverted blackness. Then came a sharp crack from the bush – a branch had snapped off. Then another tree down the slope leaned over and settled heavily to the ground. Through the hail of insects a man came running.

مارگریٹ حیران پریشان تھی کہ وہ کیا مدد کرسکتی تھی ۔ وہ نہیں جانتی تھی ۔ پھر بوڑھاسٹیفن کھیتوں سے واپس آ گیا ۔ہم تباہ  ہو گئے ہیں،  مارگریٹ ، بر باد ہو گئے ہیں۔ وہ بھکاری آدھے گھنٹے کے اندر فارم سے ہر پتا اور پتی کھا سکتے ہیں اور ابھی صرف سہ پہر کی ابتدا  ہے ۔ اگر ہم کافی مقدار میں دھواں پیدا کرسکیں ، بہت زیادہ شور مچا ئیں۔  اسوقت تک کہ سورج غروب ہو جا ئے تو شاید وہ کسی اور جگہ قیام کر لیں گے۔ اور  پھر  آگ جلائے رکھو۔ یہ محنت طلب کام ہے ۔‘‘ باہر دیکھیں تو تمام درخت عجیب اور ساکت تھے،حشرات ان کے ساتھ چپکے ہوئے تھے ، ان کی شاخیں وزن سے زمین کو چھورہی تھیں ۔ زمین حرکت میں دکھائی دیتی تھی ۔ٹڈ یاں ہر جگہ رینگ رہی تھیں ۔ وہ بالکل بھی کھیت نہیں دیکھ سکتی تھی، غول اس قد گھنا  تھا ۔ پہاڑیوں کی طرف  بالکل ایسا تھا،  جیسے طوفانی بارش میں دیکھ رہے ہوں ۔ اس کے دیکھتے ہی ان کے تازہ ترین آگے بڑھتے ہوئے ہجوم سے سورج بھی دھندلا گیا تھا۔ یہ وقت آدھی رات کا وقت لگ رہا تھا ، ایک خلاف معمول تار یکی تھی ۔ پھر اچانک جھاڑی سے تیز چیخنے کی آواز آئی ۔ ایک شاخ ٹوٹ کر الگ ہو چکی تھی ۔  پھر ایک اور نیچے ڈھلوان پر ایک درخت جکار اور دھڑام سے زمین پر جا گرا۔ حشرات کی بوچھاڑ میں ایک آدمی  دوڑ تا  ہوا  آیا۔’’

English Paragraph

All the crops finished. Nothing left," he said.

But the gongs were still beating, the men still shouting, and Margaret asked: "Why do you go on with it, then?" "The main swarm isn't settling. They are heavy with eggs. They are looking for a place to settle and lay. If we can stop the main body settling on our farm, that's everything. If they get a chance to lay their eggs, we are going to have everything eaten flat with hoppers later on." He picked a stray locust off his shirt and split down with his thumbnail - it was clotted inside with eggs. "Imagine that multiplied by millions. You ever seen a hopper swarm on the march? Well, you're lucky."

Urdu Translation

تمام فصلیں ختم ہو گئیں ۔ کچھ نہیں بچا ‘‘ اس نے کہا۔ مگر دھاتی گھنٹے ابھی تک بج رہے تھے۔  آدمی ابھی تک چیخ و پکار کررہے تھےاور مارگریٹ نے پوچھا۔  ’’ تو پھر آپ نے یہ سب کیوں جاری رکھا ہوا ہے؟‘‘ ’’اصل غول کہیں قیام نہیں کر رہا ہے ۔ وہ انڈوں کی وجہ سے وزنی ہیں ۔ وہ ایک ایسی جگہ کی تلاش میں ہیں کہ قیام کریں اور ا نڈ ے د یں ۔ اگر ہم غول کے اصل حصے کو اپنے فارم پر قیام کرنے سے روک سکیں تو یہی سب کچھ ہے۔ اگر انہیں انڈے دینے کا موقع مل جا تا ہے تو ہماری ہر چیز مکمل طور پر کھائی جائے گی۔ جبکہ بعد میں نو خیزٹڈ ے بھی ہوں گے ۔ اس نے ایک بھٹکی ہوئی  ٹڈی اپنی قمیض سے اٹھائی اور اپنے انگوٹھے کے ناخن سے اس کا کچومر نکال دیا۔ اس کے اندرونی حصے میں انڈے چپکے ہوئے تھے۔ لاکھوں سے ضرب دے کر  ذرا  تصور کرو ۔ کیا تم نے کبھی ٹڈوں کے غول کو حملہ آورد یکھا ہے؟   اگر نہیں تو اچھی بات ہے۔  تم خوش قسمت ہو ۔

English Paragraph

"Is it very bad?" Asked Margaret fearfully, and the old man said emphatically: "We're finished. This swarm may pass over, but once they've started, they'll be coming down from the North now one after another. And then there are the hoppers - it might go on for two or three years."

"For the Lord's sake," said Margaret angrily, still half-crying, "what's here is bad enough, isn't it?" For although the evening air was no longer black and thick, but a clear blue, with a pattern of insects whizzing this way and that across it, everything else trees, buildings, bushes, earth - was gone under the moving brown masses.

Urdu Translation

کیا یہ بہت برا   ہوتا ہے؟‘‘مارگریٹ نے خوف کے عالم میں پوچھا اور بوڑھے آدمی نے پُرزور انداز سے کہا۔ ’’ہم بر باد ہو گئے ہیں ۔ یہ غول تو ہوسکتا ہے۔  گزر جائے،  مگر ایک مرتبہ،  جب انہوں نے آنا  شروع کر دیا ہے تو وہ شمال سے اس  طرف یکے بعد دیگرے آتے رہیں گے ۔

اور پھر نو خیزٹڈ ے ہوں گے۔  یہ سلسلہ دو یا تین سال تک جاری رہ سکتا ہے ۔ خدا  کے واسطے‘‘مارگریٹ نے ناراضگی سے کہا ،  وہ ابھی تک تقریبا روہانسی تھی۔  جو کچھ یہاں ہورہا ہے۔  بہت بُرا ہے، کیا ایسا نہیں ہے؟‘‘ اگرچہ  شام کی فضا مزید سیاہ اور گہری نہیں تھی۔  بلکہ صاف نیلی تھی۔  جبکہ حشرات ایک خاص ترتیب میں زناٹے سے کبھی ادھر اور کبھی اُدھر آ جار ہے تھے۔  ہر دوسری چیز ،  درخت ،  عمارتیں ،  جھاڑیاں ،  زمین ان متحرک اجسام کے نیچے دب چکی تھی ۔

English Paragraph

But Margaret preferred not even to think of them. After the midday meal the men went off to the lands. Everything was to be replanted. With a bit of luck another swarm would not come traveling down just this way. But they hoped it would rain very soon, to spring some new grass, because the cattle would die otherwise - there was not a blade of grass left on the farm. As for Margaret, she was trying to get used to the idea of three or four years of locusts. Locusts were going to be like a bad weather, from now on, always imminent. She felt like a survivor after war - if this devastated and mangled countryside was not ruin, well, what then was ruin?

But the men ate their supper with good appetites.

"It could have been worse," was what they said. "It could be much worse."

Urdu Translation

مگر  مارگریٹ نے ترجیح دی کہ ان کے متعلق سوچا بھی نہ جائے ۔ دو پہر کے کھانے کے بعد مر دکھیتوں کی طرف چلے گئے ۔ ہر چیز کو نئے سرے سے اُگانا  تھا ۔ خوش قسمتی سے،  ایک اورغول ، اس طرف کا سفر کرتے ہوئے نہیں آیا۔ مگرا نہیں امید تھی کہ جلد بارش ہوگی۔  جس سے کچھ نئی گھاس اُگے گی۔  کیونکہ دوسری صورت میں مویشی مر جائیں گے ۔ فارم پر گھاس کی ایک پتی تک نہیں بچی تھی ۔ جہاں تک مارگریٹ کا تعلق ہے۔  وہ اگلے تین  یا  چار سالوں کے لئے  ٹڈیوں کی آمد کے خیال کا عادی ہونے کی کوشش کر رہی تھی ۔ اب کے بعد سے،  ٹڈیاں ایک بُرے موسم کی طرح ہوں گی۔  ہمیشہ سر پر سوار ۔ (ینید ہر وقت ان کے حملے کا خطرہ رہے گا ۔) اس نے جنگ کے بعد بچ رہنے والی جگہ کی طرح محسوس کیا۔ اگر یہ تباہ  شدہ  اور مسخ شدہ  دیہاتی علاقہ کھنڈر نہیں تھا  تو  پھر کھنڈرکس کو کہتے تھے؟ مگروہاں کے مردوں نے شام کا ہلکا پھلکا کھانا بہت رغبت سے کھایا۔ یہ اس سے زیادہ بدتر ہوسکتا تھا۔   یہ بات تھی،  جو انہوں نے کی ۔ یہ بہت زیادہ بدتر ہوسکتا تھا ۔‘‘
