Faithfulness

English Paragraph No 1

Once Hazrat Umar sitting in the Mosque of the Holy Prophet, was busy in the affairs of the state. Two young men, holding a strong and sturdy countryman, appeared before him. They complained to Hazrat Umar that the person had murdered their old father. They demanded justice by punishing the murderer for his crime.

Urdu Translation

1۔           ایک دفعہ ، حضرت عمر (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ)  مسجد نبوی میں بیٹھے ہوئے، ریاست کے معاملات  میں مصروف تھے۔   دو نوجوان ایک مضبوط اور توانا  دیہاتی کو پکڑے ہوئے آپ کے سامنے حاضر ہوئے۔  انھوں نے حضرت عمر (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) سے شکایت کی کہ اس شخص نے ان کے بوڑھے والد کو قتل کر دیا تھا ۔  انھوں نے، قاتل کو اس کے جُرم کی سزا دیتے ہوئے  انصاف  کا مطالبہ کیا۔

English Paragraph No 2

The Caliph looked at the young man and said, "You have heard the charge leveled against you. What have you to say in your defence?" The villager replied, "Commander of the Faithful, I plead guilty to the charge. I was leading my beloved camel. When I reached a garden and halted to rest, the camel nipped a few leaves off the hanging branch of a tree. The old man, on seeing this, hurled a stone at the camel with all his might. The stone caught the camel on the side of the head. It reeled and fell down dead. The camel was very dear to me. I could not control my anger, so I took the same stone that had killed my dear camel and hurled it at the old man with all my strength. The stone hit the old man on the head and subsequently killed him. At this, these two young men came to me and I surrendered myself to them".

Urdu Translation

2۔           خلیفہ نے نوجوان کی طرف دیکھا اور فرمایا، "تم نے اپنے خلاف لگائے گے الزام  کوسُن لیا ہے۔تم نے اپنے دفاع میں کیا کہنا ہے؟"   دیہاتی نے جواب دیا،  "اے امیرالمومنین،  میں اپنے  جرم کو قبول کرتا ہوں۔  میں اپنے پیارے  اُونٹ  کو لے جا رہا تھا۔ جب میں ایک باغ میں پُہنچا اور آرام کرنے کے لئے رُکا تو اُونٹ نے ایک درخت کی لٹکی ہوئی شاخ سے   چند پتے توڑلیے۔   بوڑھے  آدمی نے یہ دیکھتے ہوئے اپنی پوری طاقت سے اُونٹ کو ایک پتھر مارا۔  پتھر اُونٹ کے سر پر لگا۔  وہ لڑکھڑایا اور  گر کر مر گیا۔   اُونٹ مجھے بہت پیارا تھا۔  میں اپنے غصے  کو قابو میں   نہ رکھ سکا، اس لیے میں نے وہی پتھر اُٹھایا، جس نے میرے  پیارے اُونٹ کومارا تھااور اسے پوری طاقت سے بوڑھے آدمی کو  کو مارا۔  پتھربوڑھے آدمی  کے سر پر لگا اور اس کے بعد وہ مر گیا۔ اس پر،  یہ دونوں نوجوان میرے پاس آئے اور میں نے خود  کو  ان کے حوالے کر دیا۔

Caliph: As you have confessed to your crime, there is no need of witnesses. You are, therefore, sentenced to death.

Villager: I accept this sentence but request you to delay the execution for three days.

Caliph: Why do you ask for delay in the execution of the sentence?

Urdu Translation

خلیفہ:        جیسا کہ،  تم نے اپنے جرم کا اعتراف کر لیا ہے، اس لئے گواہوں کی ضرورت نہیں ہے۔ تم کو سزائے موت دی جاتی ہے۔

دیہاتی:         میں سزا قبول کرتا ہوں۔ مگر آپ سے تین دن کے لئے سزا پر عملدرآمد کو موخر کرنے کی درخواست کرتا ہوں۔                     

خلیفہ:           تم سزا پر عملدرآمد کو موخر کرنے کا کیوں کہتے ہو؟

English Paragraph No 3

Villager: My father at his death left some gold for my younger brother who is too young to be told about the place where I hid it. I have buried the gold in the earth in a field and no-one knows the place. If my brother, on account of my death, does not get his due share, I shall be called to account on the Day of Judgement for being dishonest. Be kind and grant me three days' time. After handing over the gold to a trustee, I will return to face death.

Urdu Translation

3۔             دیہاتی:         میرے والد نے  اپنی وفات پر میرے چھوٹے بھائی کے لئے کچھ سونا چھوڑا تھا ،   جو  اتنا چھوٹا ہے کہ میں اسے نہیں بتا سکتا کہ میں نے اسے کہاں چھپایا  ہے۔ میں نے سونا ایک  کھیت کی زمین میں  دفن کردیا    اور کوئی  بھی  اس جگہ کے بارے میں  نہیں جانتا  ہے۔  اگر میرے  بھائی کو  میری موت کی وجہ سے، اس کا جائز  حصہ نہ ملا تو قیامت کے دن  بددیانت ہونے کی وجہ سے مجھے   جوابدہ  ہونا پڑے گا۔   مہربانی کریں  اور  مجھے تین دن کا وقت عنائت فرما دیں۔   میں سونا کسی امین کےحوالے کرنے کے  بعد، موت کا سامنا کرنے کے لئے  واپس آ جاؤں گا۔ 

Caliph: Have you anyone who can stand as surety and who will be willing to suffer death if you fail to return?

Villager:  (Looking at the people present in the court and pointing to Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffarij) This gentleman will stand as my surety.

Caliph: (addressing Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari) Do you agree to stand as surety?

Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari : I do.

Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari was a highly respected Sahabi. The Caliph accepted him as the surety. Both the accusers also agreed to it, and the criminal was allowed to leave.

Urdu Translation

خلیفہ:        کیا تمہارا کوئی ضامن ہے جو تمہارے واپس نہ آنے پر، موت کا سامنا کرنے کے لئے تیار ہو؟

 دیہاتی:         (دربار میں موجود لوگوں کی طرف دیکھتے ہوئے) حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) کی طرف اشارہ کرتے ہوئے کہا یہ معزز آدمی میرا ضامن بنے گا۔         

خلیفہ:            حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) سے مخاطب ہوتے ہوئے، کیا آپ ضامن بننے کے لئے تیار ہیں؟

حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ):         جی ہاں، میں تیار ہوں۔

                حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) بہت معزز صحابی تھے۔ خلیفہ نے انھیں بطور ضامن تسلیم کر لیا۔ دونوں دعوی گزار بھی اس بات پر متفق ہو گئے اور مجرم کو جانے کی اجازت دے دی گئی۔

English Paragraph No 4

The third day dawned. The accusers and the surety were present at the Mosque of the Holy Prophet. They were waiting for the criminal. As time passed, "Sahabah" felt anxious for the fate of Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari. When only an hour remained, both the accusers came forward and demanded Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari their man.

Urdu Translation

                4۔            تیسرے دن  کی صبح سویرے،  دعویٰ گزاراور ضامن، مسجد نبوی  میں موجودتھے۔ وہ مجرم کا ا نتظار کر رہے تھے۔  جیسے ہی وقت گزرا،  صحابہ نے  حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) کی قسمت   کے لئے بے چینی محسوس کی۔  جب صرف ایک گھنٹہ باقی  رہ گیا تو دونوں دعویٰ گزار آگے آئے اور حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ) سے اپنے آدمی کا  مطالبہ کیا۔

English Paragraph No 5

Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari: Wait a little more. There is still time, if he does not come, I will give my life in his stead to fulfill justice.

Caliph: In case the murderer does not return, the law will have its course.

5۔حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) نے کہا، کچھ دیر اور انتظار کرو۔ ابھی وقت ہے، اگر وہ آدمی نہ آیا تو میں انصاف کی خاطر اس کی جگہ پر اپنی جان دے دوں گا۔

 خلیفہ:        اگر وہ آدمی نہ آیا تو قانون پر عملدرآمدہو گا۔

English Paragraph No 6

Hearing this, the "Sahabah" became more anxious for the safety of Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari and their eyes were filled with tears. Some requested the accusers to accept blood money. But they refused, saying, "Our demand is life for life."

Urdu Translation

                6۔           یہ سن کر صحابہ حضرت ابوذر غفاری(رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) کی حفاظت  کے لئے مزید بے چین ہو گئے اور اُن کی آنکھوں میں آنسو آ گئے۔ کچھ نے دعویٰ گزاروں سے خون  بہا کی  رقم  قبول کرنے کا  کہا۔ مگر انھوں نے یہ کہتے ہوئے انکار کر دیا کہ  ہمارا مطالبہ جان کے بدلے جان ہے۔

English Paragraph No 7

When the whole court was in a worried state of mind, the villager reached there perspiring from head to foot. As he entered, he saluted the Caliph and said, 'Allah be praised for His mercy, I was able to make my uncle trustee of the gold. As you see I am right in time, do not delay the execution.

Urdu Translation

                7۔           جب دربار میں موجود ہر شخص ذہنی طور پریشان تھا تو وہ آدمی سر سے پاؤں تک پسینے میں شرابور وہاں پہنچ گیا۔جیسے ہی وہ د اخل ہو ا تو  اس نے خلیفہ کو سلام کیا اور کہا،  اللہ تعالیٰ  کے فضل وکرم سے میں  اپنے چچا کو سونے کا امین بنا نے  کےقابل ہو گیا۔  جیسا کہ آپ دیکھتے ہیں، میں وقت پر آیا  ہوں ا س لئے، سزا پر عملدرآمد سے  دیر نہ کریں۔

English Paragraph No 8

All the people present there were astonished at the honesty and faithfulness of the criminal.

Urdu Translation

8۔           عدالت میں موجود تمام افراد مجرم کی دیانتداری اور وفاداری (ایفائے عہد) پر حیران تھے۔

English Paragraph No 9

Hazrat Abuzar Ghaffari: Commander of the Faithful, the man was totally a stranger to me. I had never known or seen him before. But when out of all the bystanders, he selected me as his surety, I could not but agree. If he had not returned, I would have gladly laid down my life for him.

Urdu Translation

9۔           حضرت  ابو ذر غفاری ؓ:    اے امیر المومنین، یہ آدمی میرے لیے بالکل اجنبی تھا۔ میں اس  سے پہلے نہ تو اسے جانتا  تھا اور نہ   ہی کبھی  اسے دیکھا تھا۔ مگر جب  تمام حاضرین میں سے اس نے  مجھے اپنا  ضامن منتخب کیا تو میں متفق ہوئے بغیر   نہ رہ سکا۔ اگر وہ واپس نہ آتا تو میں خوشی سے اس کے لیے اپنی جان دے دیتا۔

Villager: Sir, when you agreed to stand as a surety for a stranger, it would be against all rules of manliness and chivalry to endanger your life to save mine.

Accusers: (of one accord) Commander of the Faithful! We forgive him. Let him live.

Urdu Translation

دیہاتی:      جناب ، جب آپ ایک اجنبی  کے لیے ضامن بننے کے لیے رضا مند ہو گئے تھے تو اپنی زندگی بچانے کے لیے آپ کی زندگی کو خطرے میں ڈالنا مردانگی اور شجاعت کے تمام اصولوں کے خلاف ہوتا۔

دعویٰ گزار: (باہمی رضا مندی سے) اے امیر المومنین! اسے معاف فرما دیں۔ اسے زندہ چھوڑ دیں۔

English Paragraph No 10

On hearing these words, the Court gave cries of joy and applause and the face of the Caliph beamed with pleasure as he said, "Young men, the blood money will be paid to you from the Peoples' Treasury, and Allah will reward you for this goodness on the Day of Judgement."

Urdu Translation

10۔         یہ الفاظ سنتے ہی عدالت خوشی کے نعروں اور تالیوں سے گونچ اٹھی اور خلیفہ کا چہرہ خوشی سے چمک گیا،  جب انہوں نے فرمایا، نوجوانو!تمہیں  خون بہا کی  رقم  بیت المال سے ادا کر دی  جائے گی اور اللہ تعالیٰ اس نیکی پر تمہیں قیامت کے دن  جزا  عطا فرمائے گا۔

English Paragraph No 11

Accusers: Commander of the Faithful, we forgive him as forgiveness is divine and, therefore, we respectfully refuse to accept any blood money.

Urdu Translation

11۔         دعویٰ گزار: اے امیر المومنین، ہم اسے معاف کرتے ہیں کیونکہ معاف کرنا نیکی کا کام ہے اور اس لیے ہم نہایت ادب کے ساتھ خون بہا کی  رقم لینے سے انکار کرتے ہیں۔
