Narration

Introduction of Direct & Indirect Speech

1)                        Direct Speech:-

To speak (repeat) the same words of the person who has said something

 is called direct speech, such as,

Ø He said to me, “I am doing my work.”

2)  Indirect Speech:-

To speak the words by changing them in your own words

is called indirect speech, such as,

Ø He told me that he was doing his work.

Direct speech:-

The sentence of direct speech has two parts,

i) Reporting Speech (Out of commas)

ii) Reported Speech (Inverted commas)

Ø He said to me, “I am doing my work.”

 

i) Reporting Speech (Out of commas)

The part of sentence which is out of commas is called “reporting speech”,

such as,

He said to me,

ii) Reported Speech (Inverted commas)

The part of sentence which is inverted commas is called reported speech,

such as,

“I am doing my work.”

Five Basic Changes

When we change direct speech into indirect speech,

the following five changes occur.

i) Change of Said or Said to

ii) Change /Removal of Commas

iii) Change of Pronoun

iv) Change of Tense

v) Change of Certain Words

These two changes occur according to the each method.
