You have to attempt any eight questions out of twelve questions. (16 Marks)

Q. 1. What was Mr. Chip’s will? Or. Whom did Mr. Chips leave his money in his will?

Or. What was the will of Mr. Chips in 1930? (LB 2008ii, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017ii, GB 2016ii)

Ans. In his will in 1930, he left most his money to the mission and to Mrs. Wicket. He also left some for a scholarship to a student.

Q. 2. Why did Ralston quarrel with Mr. Chips? Or. What was the reason that led to the quarrel between them? Or Describe row between Ralston and Mr. Chips? Or Quarrel as a most thrilling incident? Or. What led Mr. Ralston and Mr. Chips in a row? (LB 2008 ii, 2009, 2010, 2013 ii, 2015, 2016, GB 2014 ii, 2015)

Ans. When Mr. Chips turned 60, Ralston asked Mr. Chips to retire. He also told him that his pension would be arranged. Mr. Chips at once rejected the idea. Then Ralston said that he taught Latin and Greek in old ways. Mr. Chips replied angrily that the school Heads had approved his syllabus. Ralston said that his exam results were very bad, which Mr. Chips dismissed.

Q. 3. What were routine activities of Mr. Chips at Mrs. Wicket’s house? Or. What was the room look like in which Mr. Chips lived after retirement in Mrs. Wicket’s house? Or. What were Mr. Chips activities after his retirement? (LB 2008, 2010ii, 2011, GB 2016)

Ans: Mr. Chips’ room was ordinary. On the mantelpiece lay sports cards and photographs of boys and men. The walls were decorated with pictures. Books on different subjects like history and literature were to be seen which Mr. Chips enjoyed reading. He liked detective stories more. He welcomed masters and students and entertained them with tea.

Q. 4. What kind of person was Ralston? Or. What do you know about Mr. Ralston?

Ans: Ralston joined Brookfield Public School as the Head master in 1900 at the age of 37. He was a strict disciplinarian, ruthless, ambitious and energetic and a fine power transmitter. He raised the status of Brookfield. He left Brookfield in 1911 to better himself as he was offered headship of a greater school.

Q. 5. Describe Mr. Chips’ farewell speech? (LB 2008ii, 2009, 2010, 2017, GB 2015)

Ans: Mr. Chips cut many jokes during his farewell speech. There were several Latin quotations in it. There was also a reference to the Captain of the School team. He also revisited the past of Brookfield school as a teacher.

Q. 6. How did Mr. Chips come across (meet) Katherine Bridges? Or. How did Mr. Chips meet Katherine for the first time? (LB 2008, 2011, 2017, GB 2016)

Ans: Mr. Chips saw Katherine in danger on Great Gable. As he was climbing on the rock to help her, he slipped and got hurt. Now Katherine and her friend came to help him. Katherine helped and saved him. Later, they fell in love with each other. Mr. Chips was beautifully entangled in the cobweb on love.

Q. 7. When and where did Katherine and Chips got married? (LB 2012 ii, 2013)

Ans: Katherine had no parents who could get her married. She was married to Mr. Chips by an aunt of hers. She said to him on the night before the wedding. “Shall I call you Sir or Chips?” Good-bye, then- good-bye, Mr. Chips… Mr. Chips remembered these words all life.

Q. 8. How did Katherine help Mr. Chips in the matter of discipline/in his job?

Ans: Katherine often tendered her advice to Mr. Chips. H did not always take her advice but it definitely influenced him. In the matter of disciplined, she often advised him to be lenient (merciful, soft) when he was inclined to be harsh. In certain cases, she suggested him to be strict when Mr. Chips was planning to be soft.

Q. 9. Who was Mrs. Wickets? (LB 2008, 2009, 2011)

Ans: Mrs. Wickets was the land lady of Mr. Chips. She worked as the in-charge of linen-room at the school before she left the job. She let a room to Mr. Chips after his retirement and served him till his death.

Q. 10. What was given to Mr. Chips on his retirement? (LB 2008, 2009, 2012, GB 2016ii)

Ans: Mr. Chips was presented with a cheque, a writing desk and a clock on his retirement.

Q. 11. Describe Katherine’s tragic death? Or. When and how did Katherine die? (LB 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017, GB 2013, 2014 ii)

Ans: Katherine died on 1st April, 1898, with her newborn child, two years after Mr. Chip’s marriage. Mr. Chips lost interest in everything. It was spring, but was the autumn of Mr. Chip’s life. He said to young Faulkner in the lane, “My wife is dead, my child is dead and I wish I were dead.” Now sadness combined with his joys for all time.

Q. 12. What were Mr. Chips’ feelings on the death of Katherine Bridge? Or. What was the effect of Katherine’s death on Mr. Chips? (LB 2008, 2009, 2013, 2017)

Ans: Mr. Chips lost interest in everything. He did not want to talk to anyone. It was spring, but was the autumn of Mr. Chips’ life. He said to young Faulkner in the lane, “My wife is dead, my child is dead and I wish I were dead”. Now sadness combined with his joys for all time. He left his bigger house in school and returned to his bachelor room. He became serious and looked older. But teaching improved.

Q. 13. Why could Mr. Chips not write a book? Or. What difficulty did Mr. Chips face while writing his book? Or. Mr. Chips’ autobiography?) (LB 2010, 2012ii)

Ans: Mr. Chips often tried to write a book on Brookfield or his autobiography but failed. He felt tired mentally and physically while doing so. His memory of past events was not very attractive. He could not bring to true life of his past experiences. His funny and sad experiences were so much mixed that he could not describe them separately.

Q. 14. When and why did Mr. Chips retire? Or. Why did Mr. Chips decide to resign in 1913? (LB 2010, 2011, GB 2014)

Ans: Mr. Chips had bronchitis and remained off duty, during the winter term in 1913. This made him to decide to retire during the summer of 1913 at the age of 65. He thought it unfair to keep going if he could not do his duty well.

Q. 15. Katherine made a new man of Mr. Chips. Is it true? Or. How did Katherine influence Mr. Chips? (LB 2008, 2011)

Ans: Mr. Chips became popular with the boys and teachers. He became interesting to others. The students began respecting and loving him. His personality became balanced. He began accepting changes in society which earlier, he did not like.
