--  A Hockey Match  --

A hockey match is always interesting whether it is played at national level or international level. Everybody takes much interest in this game. Modern media has made this game more popular. At school level, it is also liked and played. As it is wisely said,

“Hockey is a man’s game. The team with most real men wins”.

It is very popular and enjoyed all over the world. It is my favourite game. I like it very much. I play it and like to see it being played either on the ground or on the television. This noble game is full of excitement, thrill, discipline, team- spirit, cooperation and hard work. Many children play hockey in the streets due to lack of grounds. As someone has rightly said,

Street hockey is great for kids. It's energetic, competitive, and skillful.

And best of all it keeps them off the street”.

A hockey match played between two strong teams is really a thrilling experience. Last Sunday, I enjoyed an exciting match between our School Eleven and the Raiders. It was played in our ground and a large number of spectators came to see the game. Our team had recently won the board zonal championship and was naturally considered a strong combination. The Raiders were also experienced players and had played in many tournaments. The spectators expected to see a very interesting game. As it is said,

“Hockey players have fire in their hearts and ice in their veins”.

At exactly 4:00 p.m., the referee blew a long whistle and the players who had taken up their positions in the field looked towards the centre forward. The players of two teams were wearing their uniforms with numbers written on them. As it is rightly said,

“Hockey players wear numbers because

you cannot always identify the body with dental records”.

Our centre forward Niaz pushed the ball towards the Raider’s goal and the next moment, he was running after it. It happened so swiftly that the Raiders could not move. Before this, he reached the “D”, the goalkeeper tried his best but it was too late. Niaz hit the ball right into the goal. We went mad with joy. We shouted, clapped, whistled and our players waved to us.

“Don’t go through life without goals”.

The game started again. Raiders were more vigilant (attentive) this time. Their centre forward managed to beat our players and passed the ball to his right in who passed it back to him. He dribbled it passed our defenders and reached to goal but our goalkeeper stopped the ball and sent it flying back. The ball was now with our players who were working very hard. As it is said,

“A good hockey player plays where the ball is.

A great hockey player plays where the ball is going to be”.

After a short time, our captain got the ball and raced down to the goal post. When he reached the ‘D’, he slipped and fell down. The Raiders got the ball and once again ran to our goal but our defenders fought back valiantly (bravely) and repulsed (revolted) every attack. As it is said,

“A ball is a hard rubber that hockey players strike

when they can’t hit one another”.

At this point, the referee blew a long whistle and the players walked out of the ground, for it was “half time”. The players went to the dressing room and had soft drinks and biscuits. They were energetic, excited and thrilled to win. As it is said,

“Hockey is like a disease, you can't really shake it”.

After the interval, the game became very tense. The raiders played a better game; for most of the time, the ball remained in our half. Repeatedly,  their captain who was in terrific form reached our goal. However, every time our goalkeeper stood his ground and cleared the ball. As it is rightly said,

“Our first priority was staying alive.

Our second was stopping the ball”.

At last, the time was up and our team came out happy and victorious. They won the match by one goal. We clapped and shouted with joy. Our players had not let us down.

“Sometimes, guys need to cry.

Some hockey players think, they're too tough to cry”.
